The Turkey Farm on Gossard Road is home to many genetic lines of fowl used in a variety of research trials. The turkey genetic lines began in the 1950s and have been maintained for more than 40 years. The lines include those selected for high body weight, egg production, and randombred controls. Six Japanese quail lines have been maintained for 52 generations. Japanese quail lines include those selected for body weight, high or low blood phosphorus levels, and a strain susceptible to cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis. Genetic chicken lines available for research at the Turkey Farm include one genetic line with physical conditions that mimic symptoms of muscular dystrophy.
