- West Campus Facilities
- Medical Center Facilities
- Additional Responsibilities
- What I learned
- Is ULAR right for you??
3
- Because of inhumane treatment of lab animals, it was necessary to
implement ULAR into the University’s Research Department
- Many locations throughout campus
- Operating 7 days a week from 7am-4pm
- Veterinarians, technicians, researchers, facility managers, employees,
and of course interns!!

- “ULAR’s duties include purchasing and billing for animals used in
research, ensuring compliance with regulations, and managing data
regarding animal use at OSU. ULAR veterinarians are assigned to each
animal facility to oversee the day-to-day handling of the animals and
ensure their humane care and use.”

- First six weeks
- (June 23- August 1)
- Cleanest ULAR facilities
- Transgenic Mice
- Rightmire: DNA injections, embryo implants, etc.
- Pressey: observations and housing

- Keck Racks could hold up to 140 cages each
- Between 3 and 5 Kecks per room
- Every cage had its own ventilation and water supply lines
7
- Hood helps to prevent anything from one mouse coming in contact with
another mouse
- Wipe down hood before and after using it with Spor-Klenz
- ALWAYS work under the hood when handling animals
8
- Dirty cages taken out of rooms and placed in dirty cage wash area
- Scrapped, rinsed, stacked, and placed in cage wash
- Spent about 40 minutes in cage wash
9
- Clean cages taken off racks, filled with bedding and nestlets, and
stacked
- Prepare stacks of cages, single cages, water bottles, scrubs, and wires
to be autoclaved
10
- Uses high temperatures of steam to sterilize cages
- Takes and hour and a half to complete
11
- Checking for plugs
- Euthanasia
- Hormone injections
- Giving fluids
- Unloading deliveries
12
- Saw DNA injection demonstration
- Learned about transgenic mice
13
- Gene extraction
- Injection
- Embryo implantation in uterus of surrogate mother
- Offspring

- August 5 – August 7
- Nine pigs in total
- Attached device to the heart of the pig

- I helped with preparing the pigs for surgery

16
- Mornings: clean pig and dog runs

18
- These buildings go together
- Start in Bio Sci: check animals health, change cages, and start cage
wash
- In Parks: same thing!!
19
- Assigned one or two rooms
- Mornings: Check animal’s health daily and change weekly/biweekly
- Afternoons: Everyone works in cage wash; anything that was used that day
is cleaned and restacked
- Animals are euthanized in the afternoons
- Very structured and highly organized
20

- Distributed to the proper ULAR facility

- Do your best!!
- Do not judge others
- Be honest; do not gossip
- Be on time
- Always ask if you are not sure

- Do not hesitate to learn something new
22
- Do you want to work in a research environment??
- Do you enjoy taking care of animals medically as well as emotionally??
- Would you enjoy working in different environments and with diverse
people??
- Do you enjoy being challenged mentally and physically??
- If so, then ULAR is a great way to spend your summer!!
