Program Information

The core and strength of our program lies in the diversity of our students, distinguished faculty, and joint-international and interdisciplinary programs. International programs in Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil provide in-depth exposure to international research, while our interdisciplinary programs such as the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Nutrition (OSUN) and the Environmental Science Graduate Program (ESGP) contribute to the breadth and depth of knowledge in nutrition or environmental sciences. The Department also partners with the College of Medicine’s MD/PhD program along with the College of Veterinary Medicine’s DVM/PhD program. With 70 percent of our faculty in Columbus and 30 percent in Wooster, you will have access to research, laboratories, and facilities across the state to fit your research interests. Research facilities and animal barns are located at the main campus in Columbus, but also at the Ohio Agricultural and Research Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, as well as branches across the state. Research areas span across the six major animal species and across research disciplines such as growth and development, physiology, genetics, nutrition, animal welfare/well-being, microbiology, reproduction, and environmental management. As a student in our program, you can conduct research in your field of interest and be involved in our teaching program. A member of our faculty will be available to mentor you and provide guidance throughout your education, teaching, and research experiences. We’ve also partnered with universities, government entities, and research groups worldwide through formal and informal joint programs to provide you exposure to international research.

Our joint programs include:

• CSIRO, Australia
• Animal Welfare Science Centre, University of Melbourne, Australia
• AgResearch, New Zealand
• Dexcel, Hamilton, New Zealand
• Beef CRC, University of Queensland, Australia
• University of Sao Paulo, Botacatu and Piraciacabo, Brazil
• Chinese Institution for Aquaculture

Our students routinely conduct research or study abroad at these institutions or others. Graduates of our PhD program are consistently placed in tenure-track positions in universities such as Purdue, Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, and Southern Utah University. Graduates are also employed in prestigious industry or international research scientist positions, USDA-ARS positions, or animal production, postdoctoral, or extension educator positions. We invite you to explore our web site for more information about opportunities in the Department of Animal Sciences.
