Dressage Rules
A State 4-H Dressage Horse Show will be held on the first day of the Youth Horse Show at the State Fair Grounds. Requirements to participate in The State Show are: 1) Enrolled in the 4-H Dressage Project; 2) Have at least completed the first year requirements of the 4-H Dressage Project; and 3) Must have had at least two scores of 55% or higher in tests under at least two different judges, while riding in dressage competition or at schooling shows. The judge had to be an USA Equestrian approved judge, learner judge, or be on the special dressage judge's list located on the last page of the current Ohio 4-H Judges List.
The state show will offer training level one through four tests, first level one through four tests, and tests above first level. The % blank on the score sheet are for riders riding tests above first level. Please indicate which tests you will ride if you mark the % blank, so we will have the correct score sheets available for you at the show. You may ride in two tests. If it is your first year at the State 4-H Dressage Show, you may choose which tests to ride; but, you cannot compete with the same horse in lower tests in the following years. Once you score a 60 percent or higher in a test in the state show, you must advance to the next higher test. Awards will be given at the state show for the highest score in a Training Level Test, in a First Level Test, and for the best score in a test above First Level. Ties will be broken first on the highest score earned on the second test ridden and then on who rode the more difficult second test.
The tests are not in the rulebook. Copies of the dressage tests must be purchased from The USA Equestrian, The Kentucky State Horse Park, 4047 Iron Works Parkway,Lexington,KY 40511, or call (606) 225-6900 or go to the web site www.equestrian.org to get ordering information. Each youth with the dressage project needs to order a copy of the tests for which they will be training. The tests are revised every five years.
Because The State Fair Show is a state championship contest, riders must ride the test from memory; readers will not be used.
Participation in the State Show is open entry and a rider can enter every year as long as they meet the requirements listed above. The rider could also show in the non-dressage part of the Junior Fair Horse Show if they qualified to do so in a PAS show with their dressage horse. They could bring two horses; one qualified for dressage and another qualified under PAS or a production horse, as long as both horses are 4-H projects.
Entries need to be made by the deadline indicated on the entry form and to the person indicated on the form. Riders will be contacted before the show with their ride times for the show. If riders fail to show and ride they are not allowed to show the following year as well (Emergency situations with verification will be considered by show management for exceptions.).
For additional information, check rules for dressage in The 4-H Uniform Rules for 4-H Horse Shows, circular 179. Riders may also want to contact the various dressage organizations in their area.
