John Douglass, Class of 1984, was inducted into The Ohio State University Dairy Science Hall of Service April 20 at the Department of Animal Sciences Recognition Banquet, An Evening of Excellence. John was born in Orrville, OH, and attended high school in Smithville, OH, where he was noted as being an outstanding football player and was awarded the FFA State Farmer degree. He was active in 4-H for 10 years. In 1984, he obtained the B.S. degree in Dairy Science with a minor in Agricultural Economics from The Ohio State University. After graduation, John returned to the family farm, Catalpadale. In 2010, John purchased the 3,000 cow neighboring dairy, Bristol Dairy. Currently, John and his family milk approximately 5,700 cows on three dairy farms: Catalpadale Dairy and Bristol Dairy located in Marshallville, OH, and Coral Hill Dairy, located in Glasgow, KY. John represented dairy producers with the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Livestock Environmental Permitting program and is a member of the Dairy Advisory Committee with the Ohio Farm Bureau. John is past President of the Wayne County Farm Bureau, and he was a charter member of the Progressive Dairy Producers of Ohio, which later became the Ohio Dairy Producers Association (ODPA), having served a term as president of ODPA. Nationally, John is a member of the Kentucky Dairy Producers Association and is a member of the 21st Century Dairy Club. John has not only been an invaluable resource to the community and the Ohio dairy industry but also to OSU, having positively impacted the research, teaching, and extension activities of the Department and University, including hosting research trials and many educational events. As expressed by some of the nominators, "John and Lois Douglass are the epitome of caring, effective owners and managers of a first class dairy", and he is "an innovative individual of high character who is highly respected and a positive influence in the Ohio dairy industry". The recognition provided as a recipient of the Dairy Science Hall of Service Award acknowledges John's many contributions to the Ohio dairy industry and to the development of young people.
