On January 30, 2016, The Ohio State University’s Department of Animal Sciences and Ohio Future Farmers of America (FFA) hosted 30 participants in the first Meat Judging Coaches Clinic in the Animal Science building. The clinic targeted anyone involved in coaching, or interested in coaching, a meat judging team. Participants learned and reviewed the principles of grading and evaluating carcasses and wholesale cuts originating from beef, pork, and lamb. In addition, anatomy and muscle myology was covered for retail identification. The program was initiated by Dr. Lyda G.

Criteria for selection will include demonstrated commitment and service to the beef cattle industry. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a passion for the areas of beef breeding, genetics, and reproduction. Additional considerations will include academic performance, personal character, and service to the beef cattle industry.

Dr. Michael Lilburn was awarded the 2016 Charles Beard Research Excellence Award January 26 from the US Poultry and Egg Association. The recognition took place at the International Poultry Scientific Forum at the International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta, GA.
"The goal of the Charles Beard Research Excellence Award is to recognize outstanding completed research projects, funded by USPOULTRY or the USPOULTRY Foundation, which have made a significant positive impact on the poultry industry."

The 2016 Ohio State University Meats Judging Team in the Department of Animal Sciences began a new year of competition. The 2016 meats judging team opened their season with their first competition, held on January 17th, placing 10th (out of 13) at the National Western contest in Denver, Colorado. This is the first time the Fightin’ Buckeyes competed in the National Western. The contest is held at JBS beef packing in Greely, CO, and a banquet is held at the National Western Stockshow in Denver, CO.

The OSU Dairy Judging Team of Laura Bond, Colton Harstine, Ella Jackson, and Meghan Sanders participated in the contest located at the Fort Worth Stock Show in Texas.
