Student Jobs

If you are a work-study student and have financial aid for the school year, you can find the Animal Sciences positions on the Work-Study job site using the search engine. If you find a position in which you are interested, contact the supervisor listed on the work-study referral form. You will need to print this form out when you go for an interview with the supervisor.

The Department of Animal Sciences has a variety of positions available for students. These include working in laboratories, clerical offices, and barn at the farms. If you are interested in one of the farm positions, you can contact the farm managers at each of the Columbus-area farms. If you are unsure which supervisor to contact for a position, you can contact Michelle Milligan (contact info at right) for information on any open positions in the department.

Scholarships

Scholarships are good avenues to help with college expenses. Many are merit based, and some may require other conditions.

You must file the college Scholarship Application Form (click here for link) to be considered for departmental scholarships. This application is available November 1 and must be submitted by February 15. The college Scholarship Application is the only one necessary for all of the departmental scholarships listed below, and, of course, this application also applies to College scholarships.

Receipt of a departmental academic award does not preclude your receiving college or university awards if you qualify.

Scholarships

Various scholarships are available for Animal Sciences undergraduate and/or graduate students. The lists here summarize scholarships with different emphases in the animal sciences. Each scholarship may provide funds to support one or more students.

If you do not see what you are looking for, don't stop! Talk to your advisor or the contact person above. In addition, various local groups, trade organizations, commodity groups, etc. offer scholarships, so investigate these types of entities for possible opportunities.

Animal Sciences

Charles B. Boyles Memorial Scholarship Fund in Animal Science
Income provides scholarships for sophomore students from Ohio and adjoining states, with preference to students from Ohio and West Virginia, who have been admitted to their freshman year in the study of animal science.

Columbus Feed Club Endowed Scholarship Fund
Income provides a scholarship for students with a preference in animal science. Criteria include academic achievement, leadership in extracurricular activities, and financial need.

John Scott and Della Errington Memorial Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for Tuscarawas County students in animal science in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Human Ecology. Two-thirds of the income is for students in the Department of Animal Sciences. One-third is for students in the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Management.

James O. Grandstaff Memorial Fund
Income provides an award to either and undergraduate or graduate student majoring in animal science. Qualifications include high scholastic standing, dedication to the livestock industry and agriculture, residence at some time on a farm or in a rural area in Ohio, and dedication to principles of honesty, integrity, forthrightness, and love of country.

Bernice C. Hum Animal Science Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for students in animal science.

Lawrence A. Kauffman Memorial Fund
Income is used for animal science undergraduate scholarships.

D. J. Kays Memorial Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for undergraduate animal science majors who have completed at least three quarters in the College. Criteria include scholarship, leadership activities, need, and the individual’s aim toward a career in Animal Science.

Forrest G. Ketner Memorial Scholarship Fund
Income supports a scholarship for students in animal sciences or agribusiness and applied economics in alternating years.

Fawnye M. Kuohn Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships to students in animal science and agricultural economics who have demonstrated academic ability and a need for financial assistance.

Mid-States Meat Association Scholarship
The fund shall be used for students in the Department of Animal Sciences.

James R. Miller Agriculture Scholarship Fund
Income provides a scholarship in animal science for an undergraduate student with need and strong academic promise.

Bill Newland Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Animal Science
Income provides scholarships to undergraduates in the Department of Animal Sciences. Criteria for selection shall include above average scholastic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential.

Ohio Agribusiness Assn. – Animal Science Scholarship
Annual gift provides support to an undergraduate student in animal science with strong academic achievement, leadership skill, and interest in agribusiness sales/management.

Von Price Scholarship Endowment Fund
This fund was established April 7, 2006 by the Board of Trustees with gifts in memory of Von Price of Garrettsville, Ohio, from his family.  This fund is used to award one or more scholarships to students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 who demonstrate merit and need, and who are members of the current year’s Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Team.

Robert Watson Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for deserving undergraduates in the Department of Animal Sciences.
 

Beef Cattle Interest

Buckeye Polled Hereford Association Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for a junior or senior majoring in animal sciences. Criteria are based on scholarship, interest in beef cattle, participation in student activities, and financial need.

L. P. McCann Memorial Scholarship Award in Animal Science
Income provides a scholarship for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors studying animal science with intended careers in research, education, farming, ranching or other business or industry associated with beef cattle. Sophomores and juniors should demonstrate an unusually strong contribution to activities of Saddle and Sirloin Club and maintain ≥ 3.0 GPA.

Ralph H. Grimshaw Award
Income provides awards to graduate students enrolled in animal sciences with a preference to students who are enrolled or plan to enroll in a graduate program related to sheep or other ruminant animals.

Ralph “Dutch” E. Schramm Scholarship Fund in Animal Science
Income supports three scholarships for junior/senior students in animal science who exhibit leadership skills, participate in organizations and community service and have a ≥ 2.5 GPA. Separate scholarships are available for students who 1) are members of ATZ fraternity with beef or sheep interests, 2) are studying abroad or completing an international internship in Australia with the beef industry preferred, and 3) have participated in the Little “I” in the beef division.
 

Dairy Science Interest

Alpha Gamma Sigma Foundation-Clair E. Jones Scholarship
Annual gift supports an above average student from Ohio with an interest in dairy science who shows evidence of leadership ability. Preference given to Alpha Gamma Sigma members.

William J. Brakel Endowed Scholarship Fund in Dairy Science
Income provides scholarships for outstanding dairy science students.

COBA/Select Sires – Wallace Erickson Scholarship
Supports an undergraduate student emphasizing dairy science with high ability, demonstrated leadership, and interest in artificial insemination.

Dairy Farmers of America Agricultural and Human Ecology Fund
Income provides scholarship support for undergraduate dairy students with interest in dairy marketing.

Wayne and Jane Dalton Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for dairy science students who have expressed a desire for a career in dairy production.

Bob Gano Scholarship Fund
Income supports sophomore, junior, or senior animal science student specializing in dairy science. First preference given to Tuscarawas County students, second preference to student employees of OSU Dairy Facility with desire to return to production agriculture, and lastly to any qualified applicant.

Harold E. and Florence R. Kaeser Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for students majoring in animal sciences with intent to pursue a career in the dairy industry. Criteria are above average academic ability, demonstrated leadership, and interest in exhibiting or evaluating dairy cattle.

Lucile and Roland Kennedy Scholarship Fund in Dairy Science
Income provides undergraduate scholarships or fellowships and associateships for graduate students in dairy science.

Jean and Agnes Lemmermen Endowed Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for sophomore, junior, or senior students in animal science specializing in dairy science. 4-H or FFA background preferred.

Thomas M. Ludwick Scholarship Fund
Income is used to support one or more scholarship awards for outstanding dairy science students each year.

Earl and Wilma McMunn Scholarship in Dairy Science
Income provides scholarships for undergraduates in animal science specializing in dairy science.

Ohio Agribusiness Assn. – Dairy Science Scholarship
Annual gift provides support to an undergraduate student in dairy science with strong academic achievement, leadership skill, and interest in agribusiness sales/management.

Schuyler M. Salisbury Memorial Scholarships
Income provides a scholarship for an outstanding junior or senior student in dairy science. Other criteria are integrity, enthusiasm for dairy science, collegiality, and scholastic performance.

Equine Interest

William Tyznik Equine Research Fund
Income supports scholarship for an equine nutrition student.

Meat Science Interest

Edgar W. Ingram Scholarship
Annual gift provides support for undergraduate and graduate students interested in meat science studies.

L. E. Kunkle Student Development Fund
Income provides scholarships for worthy and needy undergraduate and/or graduate students who have demonstrated academic ability in meat science.

Ralph S. Lovett Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships for animal science majors in the College specializing in meat science.

Rodney F. Plimpton, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund in Animal/Meat Science
Income provides scholarships for qualified students in meat science in the College. Criteria include evidence of above average scholarship, participation in student activities with leadership potential, and completion of Animal Sciences 200.

Poultry Science Interest

Myrtle Cook Cray and Raymond E. Cray Scholarship Fund
Income supports students in poultry science in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Robert L. Hocker Poultry Science Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships or awards for undergraduate or graduate students in poultry science.

Edna and R. George Jaap Scholarship Fund
Income provides scholarships in the College with preference to poultry science students.

Ohio Poultry Association
Annual gift provides scholarship support for an undergraduate student based on character, leadership, scholarship, and participation in activities related to poultry.

Robert W. Terry Memorial
Income is used according to the same regulations as prescribed for the Ohio Poultry Research Fund or for poultry scholarships or fellowship funds.
 

Sheep Interest

Seth Adams Scholarship
Scholarship is awarded to an animal science student especially interested in the field of sheep production.

Ralph H. Grimshaw Award
Income provides awards to graduate students enrolled in animal sciences with a preference to students who are enrolled or plan to enroll in a graduate program related to sheep or other ruminant animals.
