Dr. Lyda Garcia selected for National Academy of Sciences Committee

Dr. Lyda Garcia with the Department of Animal Sciences, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University has been appointed to serve on the Heritable Genetic Modification in Food Animals Committee, an ad hoc committee within the National Academy of Sciences.

Garcia will assist the committee as it seeks to address methods for heritable genetic modifications while also identifying risks to humans, animals and the environment.  Her relevance to this committee is in her understanding of and experiences with the impacts of animal welfare, genetics, and nutrition on meat quality and safety leading to One Health.

The committee will develop a report summarizing findings on an array of topics within the broader science of heritable genome modification. Identifying key knowledge gaps and future areas of research, the committee will make suggestions for the near future of the regulatory science.
