COLUMBUS, Ohio — Joe Miley, a 1982 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES), has been named the 2025 recipient of the Dairy Science Hall of Service Award, honoring a lifetime of contributions to Ohio’s dairy industry and the development of future leaders.
The award was presented April 18 during a ceremony at the Animal Sciences Arena. Miley, a dairy cattle breeder from West Salem, Ohio, was surprised with the recognition.
Housed within the Department of Animal Sciences at CFAES, the Dairy Science Hall of Service recognizes individuals who have made significant impacts in elevating the stature of dairy farming in Ohio, improving the industry, or inspiring the next generation of agricultural leaders.
After earning his degree in dairy science, Miley launched a successful purebred dairy cattle operation and became a 30-year member of the Ohio Holstein Association, where he served in multiple leadership roles. Over four decades, he also served as a delegate to the National Holstein Convention and participated in numerous state and national shows.
In 2011, Miley was elected to the board of the Ohio Dairy Producers Association (ODPA), an advocacy group for Ohio’s dairy families. He has chaired the ODPA board since 2015 and served on multiple state committees, including the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board’s dairy subcommittee and the OSU Waterman Dairy Planning Committee.
Miley was also elected by peers in 2018 to the American Dairy Association Mideast board, where he currently serves as treasurer. He chaired the Smith Dairy advisory board for several years.
Beyond industry leadership, Miley and his wife, Diana, supported youth through the Ohio Junior Holstein program and advised their local Cream of the Crop 4-H Club. The Miley dairy farm has hosted 4-H, FFA, and Ohio State ATI students for dairy judging practices, and Miley has helped coach the Wayne County team for many years.
“Having the opportunity to work with Joe Miley for many years, I have observed him listening to input from many individuals to guide a group decision that will be in the best interest of Ohio’s dairy producers,” said Maurice Eastridge, professor in the Department of Animal Sciences. “Joe is well informed of the issues impacting the dairy industry, and he places high value on people.
“His service has benefited youth, college students, dairy organizations, and dairy farm families.”
Miley’s nomination was supported by Scott Higgins of the American Dairy Association Mideast and David Thorbahn of Select Sires, with additional letters of support coordinated by Eastridge.
His recognition highlights a career marked by thoughtful leadership, deep community roots, and a tireless commitment to advancing Ohio’s dairy sector.
