Want to learn more about food animal processing? Ohio State University extension meat specialists are offering a two-day workshop to help the current labor force face challenges brought forth by the 2020 pandemic.
What To Expect: Participants will have a better understanding of anatomy, muscle myology, cutting guidelines, food safety, meat quality, the role of processed meat and government regulated non-meat ingredients (i.e. salt, phosphates, nitrites, etc.) finalized by conducting hands-on cutting tests to understand the impact of yields on profit margins.

A Winter Celebration in the Department of Animal Sciences was held on January 11, 2021. The event was held to kick off the Spring Semester 2021 by looking back on 2020 and focusing on the positive accomplishments.

Dr. John Foltz brings holiday cheer by rail to the Department of Animal Sciences every year with his trains that he sets up in the Animal Science, Plumb Hall, and Gerlaugh Hall main offices on the Columbus and Wooster campuses.

Every year, Buckeye Dairy Club hosts a heifer showmanship contest at OSU’s very own Waterman Dairy Facility! This is an opportunity for university students, employees, staff, and faculty to get out of the classroom and away from the desk to de-stress while bonding with and training their chosen heifer! This year, being a year full of added stress and hardships, this opportunity allowed 90 participants to train animals while interacting with fellow Buckeyes at the same time!

The results are in! Today, the OSU College Dairy Judging Team finished in 5th place and 5th in reasons in the first ever Virtual Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest. They placed well and ended up 3rd in that category, and 3rd high team in Holsteins. Sara had a good day. She was 3rd in placings, 10th in reasons, and 5th overall. It was an unusual year, yet the program has been sustained! The future looks promising and thank you to all the farms who assisted them!

The Intercollegiate Animal Welfare Judging/Assessment Contest (AWJAC) virtually celebrated its 20th year of competition on November 21st and 22nd. The Ohio State University was well-represented across all student divisions: undergraduate (junior and senior), graduate, and veterinary.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the 2020 Ohio Dairy Challenge was held a little differently than in previous years. The program was held virtually during November 18-21, whereby herd records, pictures, videos, farm map, a farmer questionnaire, and feeding information were provided to students on Wednesday pm when students could begin evaluating the information. On Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm, a Zoom meeting was held with the farmer for the students to ask questions about the operation.

Abbiegail Greer, a major in Meat Science in the Department of Animal Sciences, received the $5,000 Frank DeBeneditti Scholarship from the North American Meat Institute (NAMI).
The NAMI Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1995 to recognize undergraduate students pursuing degrees in Animal, Meat, and Food Sciences along with Culinary Arts.
