Dr. Hui Yu joined the Department of Anima Sciences in January 2024 as the Assistant Professor of Animal Genetics. Dr. Yu joins the department following her postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan, focusing her research on obesity, diabetes and metabolism in adipose tissue and central nervous system. Hui will teach Animal Genetics in the fall of 2024 and continues her research using well-controlled biochemical, molecular, cellular and genetic experimental approaches to better understand disorders in both animals and humans.

Dr. Grazyne Tresoldi joined the Department of Animal Sciences in December 2023. She joins us from the University of California, Davis with years of experience researching heat stress in dairy cattle and developing solutions to to optimize cow cooling considering more sustainable, less water-demanding strategies.

Please welcome Sheriden Schuerman to the department as our new student office assistant in the Animal Sciences Building on the Columbus campus. Sheriden is a 3rd year, undergraduate student, majoring in Sustainable Plant Systems – Plant Biosciences and minoring in Agriculture Communication and Leadership Studies. Outside of school, she is currently involved in Sigma Alpha where she holds the treasurer position, the Saddle and Sirloin Club where she also holds the treasurer position, and the Crops and Soils Club.

On January 30, 2024, The Ohio State University broke ground on the $52 million Multispecies Animal Learning Center (MALC), which will advance student learning and workforce development in animal agriculture.
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) will build the state-of-the-art facility at Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory on the Columbus campus.

Dr. Joao Carlos Gomes Neto joined the Department of Animal Sciences on January 8th, 2024 as the Assistant Professor of Food Safety and Antimicrobial Resistance. Joao's research centers around foodborne pathogen genomics with epidemiological applications, and identifying novel ecologically proven synbiotic approaches to enhance colonization resistance against foodborne pathogens in swine and poultry.

Dr. Kirby Krogstad joined the Department of Animal Sciences on January 8th, 2024. Kirby received his BS from South Dakota State University in Dairy Production before earning his MS and PhD in Animal Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Michigan State University, respectively. Kirby serves as an assistant professor and will be doing research and extension in dairy nutrition, investigating how nutrition may improve the health, inflammatory status, and efficiency of dairy cattle.

Columbus, OH- Dr. Jeffrey Firkins is celebrating 36 years with the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Food, Agriculture, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) at The Ohio State University. Dr. Firkins also was recognized as a 2023 Distinguished Professor within CFAES, an honor granted to professors within the college whose work creates significant impact in teaching, research, and outreach.

Circleville, OH- Saddle and Sirloin Club rang in the new year in a big way, hosting their inaugural Saddle and Sirloin Spectacular cattle show on December 29-31. While students in the organization are no stranger to livestock show management and have facilitated youth opportunities frequently, this is the first year for their cattle show.
