2020 Animal Sciences Student Celebration of Excellence

The Department of Animal Sciences hosted a virtual Student Celebration of Excellence on April 28, 2020 to honor the achievements of undergraduate seniors and graduate students.  The email invitation to dress-up and celebrate was sent out to the students, their families, faculty, and staff.

The celebration opened with a welcome from Dr. John Foltz, Chair and a rousing social distancing virtual video of the OSU Marching Band.  Emilia Sgambati (undergraduate student) and Nikki Hardy (graduate student) provided memorable videos of their educational journeys in the Department of Animal Sciences. 

Awards were presented to the following students:

George R. Johnson Award - This award is given to a junior or senior with the highest grade point average majoring in animal or meat sciences.

William E. Krauss Director’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Research

This award recognizes the best paper published by a current or recently graduated PhD student. This award emphasizes the importance to doctoral students of publishing their data in a refereed journal and rewarding the highest quality peer-reviewed research. This year’s recipient was Joonbum Lee. His publication, Direct Delivery of Adenoviral CRISPR/Cas9 Vector into the Blastoderm for Generation of Targeted Gene Knockout in Quail, was nominated and selected based on his publication’s originality, creativity, sophistication of data and research methods, and academic significance.  Dr. Kichoon Lee is Joonbum’s advisor.

CFAES Distinguished Seniors - This award is given to those seniors who excel in academics and scholarship, research and innovation, service and involvement, and influence and leadership. Of the 25 seniors recognized by CFAES, the five students shown below were from the Department of Animal Sciences. A video of each of the students provided an overview of their OSU experiences. Congratulations to all of our seniors!


Dr. Maurice Eastridge presented the seniors with a pin to commemorate their excellence and to provide a memento of their career in the Department of Animal Sciences.

The program also included the viewing of a video on the sesquicentennial celebration of The Ohio State University, focusing on 150 years of excellence. The Celebration of Excellence ended with Dr. John Foltz, Chair of the Department of Animal Sciences, congratulating the students and the group being led in Carmen Ohio by a recording of the OSU Men’s Glee Club.
