  1. New Summer 2017 Course Offering

    ANIMSCI/MEATSCI 5410: Food Animal Production and Processing Industry Tour (2 Credit Hours)

    Goals and Objectives: Students have an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience with commercial animal production and food animal processing facilities. This course will include travel to off-campus facilities.

    Meeting Times: May 10, 2017 – June 5, 2017 (M: 9am – 1pm; T-F: 1:00pm – 2:20pm)

    Any animal can be pictured, whether that be a family pet or simply your favorite animal. Submit pictures to the editor, Caroline Cotter, every Sunday for the following week's newsletter.

    Parameters of the photo must be 1200 X 260. Creative efforts will be appreciated and are preferred! Feel free to make it seasonal or full of school spirit.

     

  5. Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC.

    Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC is a family owned Grade A creamery located in Waynesboro, GA, built and opened in January 2010. The creamery’s products are non-homogenized and include ice cream and butter. Their products can be found from Atlanta to Savannah on numerous restaurant menus and grocery shelves.
     
    They are seeking an intern for summer of 2017, beginning in May or early June and ending the beginning of August. A complete position description for the available internship is attached.
    Students majoring in dairy science, animal science, food science, ag business or ag communications who are familiar with the dairy industry are preferred. Strong writing and public speaking, and computer skills are essential. While juniors or seniors will be given preference, sophomores will be considered. Applicants must submit cover letters and resumes with no less than three references no later than April 20, 2017.
  6. Bring the Farm to You 2017 Summer Intern

    Bring the Farm to You is an exciting form of education and outreach. By bringing farm experiences right to people’s locations, they inspire and excite them about their connections to farms, right in their own communities. Bring the Farm to You serves schools, libraries, senior centers, childcare centers, and public and private events through classes, demonstrations, hands-on programs, learning parties, and personal interactions with farm animals.

    This year, they are looking for an intern to assist with teaching programs, take pictures and video, interview visitors, and document details of the program to be used as training. In doing so, you’ll become exposed to a fresh form of environmental education – one that shares important and meaningful connections with the client, and supports the independent entrepreneur in an agricultural career and way of life. Additionally, interns will gain experience on a small homestead, learning animal care, self-sufficiency skills, and business administration. The intern will have an opportunity to do some or all of the following tasks, depending on interest and availability:


    Programs

    • Attend on-location programs to assist the Lead Teacher
    • Take pictures, video and audio recordings of the programs and of participants interacting with the animals and equipment
    • Document details of the programs to be used for training
    • Interview program participants and log frequently asked questions
       

    Farm

    • Assist with routine animal care (brushing angora rabbit, trimming hooves, clipping wings)
    • Assist with animal chores such as feeding, cleaning cages, moving hay, etc.
    • Assist with tending the beehives and the beekeeping equipment (if interested)
    • Assist in the garden and greenhouse, watering, weeding, and harvesting
       

    Business

    • Create documents to be used for training and to increase the quality of the programs
    • Catalog and label supplies
    • Transcribe program scripts from recordings

    Compensation and schedule: The intern will work part-time as needed, based on the program schedule. Compensation is $8.15/hour.

  7. Red Arrow Farms Internship

    Red Arrow Farms, a small family farm located in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, is seeking a summer intern to assist in all aspects of farm management, animal husbandry, and markets.

    Red Arrow Farms has approximately 65 grass-fed Hereford/Angus cross beef animals and about a dozen bee hives. Products are sold at local farmer's markets during the summer. The farm's products are all natural, with no hormones or chemical supplements.

    Duties would include (but may not be limited to):

    • Daily animal care assting in moving animals between pastures
    • Loading animals for slaughter
    • Fence repair and other farm maintenance
    • Preparing products for and assisting with two weekly farmer's markets
    • Assisting in hive maintenance and honey collection.

    Any ideas an intern has to improve operation are welcome and a project of their interest may be incorporated into their summer experience if feasible.

    • Salary: $10 per hour
    • Start: Appx. May 15th
    • Finish: Any point upon allowing the intern at least 300 hours of work experience
    • Possibility of housing at farm if intern does not live locally
    • Must have transportation and a clean driving record

  8. McCarty Family Farms Internship

     McCarty Family Farms is seeking a motivated student to spend the summer learning and understanding all aspects of our unique business. They are a 4th generation family farm that relocated from northeast Pennsylvania to western Kansas in the late 90’s. What started as one farm is now four farms and a processing plant with a direct supply agreement with the Dannon yogurt company. Check out this brochure for more information.

  11. Part-time Help Needed at Dairy Farm

    There is a newly formed organic dairy farm near Circleville, OH (about 35 minutes from campus) that is looking for some part-time help during the week or on weekends. This could be during the Spring Semester and/or possibly the summer. This opportunity could be used as an internship or just as a part-time job.   13. 2017 OSU ATI Dairy Internship

    The OSU/ATI Dairy farm has internship opportunities available at the farm outside of Wooster, Ohio. The internship will be available from May through August and would be most suitable for those completing their Freshmen or Sophomore years. The internship will focus on the day to day application of management practices and the intern will rotate through four different jobs: Feeding, Milking, Calf and Heifer Raising, and Health and Reproduction. The goal of the internship is to help you see how management decisions affect day to day operations, and also how worker performance affects management decisions. You will be exposed to management programs like PCDart, CowManager, and TMR Tracker, as well as working with other support personnel.

  18. STF- Barn Manager Listing

    Company Description
    Stone’s Throw Farm is a full-service equestrian boarding and riding facility, located in Dublin, Ohio, just minutes from the heart of Columbus.     The Position
    The on-site Barn Manager position will grow in responsibility alongside the business, but is at all times expected to be part of the management team, helping to shape the center’s programs and practices. Initially, the Barn Manager will be primarily responsible for the daily care and maintenance for up to 40 horses, including feeding and cleaning stalls, moving horses to turn-out runs, dragging the arenas as needed, basic stable cleaning and maintenance, and responding to client inquiries and concerns. As the boarding business grows, the Barn Manager will lead the development of additional programs, and begin management and oversight of other employees to ensure the continued success of the center.

  20. Ohio Poultry Association Bird Health Programs Assistant

    The Ohio Poultry Association (OPA) is a dynamic organization representing Ohio’s egg, turkey and chicken farms, processing and allied industries.  Caring for consumers and Ohio poultry farms by providing leadership to responsibly produce safe, affordable, and wholesome food is our prime mission.  An integral part of our mission is providing for bird health programs.  OPA is seeking a qualified individual who is energetic and hard working to join our Bird Health team.

    Position Summary:

    The Bird Health Programs Assistant, will work cooperatively with the Manager of Bird Health Programs, who is responsible for the management and direction of all avian health programs. These programs include the Ohio National Poultry Improvement Plan (Official State Agency) and egg quality assurance programs. 

    Working Relationships:

    OPA is a small, but vibrant office – a true team environment.  This position reports directly to the Manager of Bird Health Programs and ultimately to the OPA Executive Vice President.  The position is based in Columbus, Ohio.  In state and out of state travel are required.

    Duties (in cooperation with Director of Bird Health Programs):

    NPIP · OPA is the Ohio Official State Agency for the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP).  This is an official USDA program with industry support and leadership.  USDA provides oversight and national leadership and staff.  OPA works closely with the Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.  NPIP duties include, but are not limited to:

    •  Work cooperatively with State and federal USDA and ODA staff on state bird health programs including Avian Influenza.
    • Assist with commercial and mail-order hatchery oversight – flock qualification, hatchery audits and inspections, biosecurity audits, sampling and testing protocol.
    • Monitor outreach and surveillance programs to upland gamebird, exhibition, and backyard flock owners.  Assist with annual flock qualifications, audits, sampling and testing protocol. 
    •  Responsible for NPIP backyard flock inquiries and participation in programs, including testing.
    • Attend local, state and national NPIP, USDA, ODA and OPA meetings as required.  Conduct poultry producer and NPIP member meetings as required. Provide for annual Pullorum tester training class.
    • Maintain all NPIP record databases. Coordinate processing of NPIP forms, testing results and paperwork. Process laboratory and NPIP invoices. Prepare quarterly serology numbers for accountability. Assist with preparation of applications, quarterly and yearly reports.
    • Monitor and maintain NPIP VS Form 9-3 distribution and database.
    •  Assist in the implementation and monitoring of a state permitting program.

    Egg Quality Programs – OPA administers the Ohio Egg Quality Assurance Program (OEQAP) and assists members with maintaining records for the Federal Egg Safety Rule.  

    • Assist with maintenance of OEQAP databases.  Distribute test results to producers.  Serve as a liaison between producers and the official laboratory and state/federal agencies.

    Other Duties –

    •  Maintain OPA inventory of bird health program equipment and supplies.  Track Antigen supply and shipments.
    • Assist OPA staff on industry-wide events, programs and projects.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

    •  Minimum Bachelor of Science – preferred major in Animal Sciences or Poultry Science, or equivalent experience.
    • Ability to think and act strategically with the capacity for growth in strategic thinking ability. Strong problem-solving skills, and proven project management and continuous improvement experience and coordination of multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Open and direct communicator; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Focus on accuracy and detail.

    Organix Recycling was incorporated in 2009 for the explicit purpose of diverting food from landfills to sustainable recycling facilities. They are the largest collector of supermarket food recyclables in the U.S. and serve 34 States and Puerto Rico. They recover retail food from more than 6000 major retail supermarkets and recycle most of this into ruminant feed. Animal feed represents the most value-added method of recycling retail food and is a growth market. 

    Major Responsibilities:

    • Assist Feed Director in executing feed sales and marketing plans
    • Candidates are expected to establish, support and maintain beef and dairy cattle accounts within a given geographic area that result in growth of usage of Organix’s supply of food waste by-products while demonstrating industry networking skills, specifically in proactively creating connections in key areas to increase company visibility and credibility

    This HAACP certified person is responsible for food safety, quality and legality. This position requires outlining product deficiencies and suggested corrections. Track corrective actions to the customer, government and QA inspections until discrepancies are resolved.   27. The Jockey Club Scholarship

    The Jockey Club Now Providing $21,000 in Academic Scholarships

    The Jockey Club announced that it will be awarding $21,000 in college scholarships for the academic year that begins in the fall of 2017.

    A new scholarship, known as The Jockey Club Scholarship, will provide $15,000 ($7,500 per semester) to a student who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher at any university and has demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred racing industry.

    That scholarship complements The Jockey Club Jack Goodman Scholarship, which was created in 2007 and is awarded annually to a student or students at the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). The annual $6,000 ($3,000 per semester) Jack Goodman Scholarship is based on academic achievement, a proposed career path in the Thoroughbred racing industry, and previous industry involvement.

    Goodman, a resident of Tucson, is a longtime member of The Jockey Club and is one of three founders of the RTIP. To date, there have been 17 recipients of The Jockey Club Jack Goodman Scholarship and 15 of them are working in the equine industry.

    “The Jockey Club, in a variety of ways, is always trying to encourage the participation of young people in our sport and not just as fans,” said James L. Gagliano, president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club. “With these scholarships, we are aiming to attract students who have demonstrated a passion for Thoroughbred racing and may want to make it their livelihood.”

    For The Jockey Club Scholarship, the following criteria will be considered: career aspirations, activities involving the equine or Thoroughbred industry, and high academic achievement.

  28. Ohio Pork Council Scholarships

    Applications due April 29, 2017. The Ohio Pork Council will be offering up to $9,000 in scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1000 per individual. Students entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year in college are encouraged to apply. Applicants, or their parents, must be actively involved in the pork industry. Children of pork industry employees, managers and contract growers are eligible.

    In honor of 44 years of service to Ohio’s pork industry, as executive vice president of the Ohio Pork Council, a scholarship fund has been established to recognize Dick Isler. An annual scholarship of at least $1,000 will be awarded to college students pursuing a degree in agriculture.

    The Ohio Pork Council Women will also be offering $500 scholarships to college students in their junior year or higher.

  29. National Poultry & Food Dist. Assn Scholarship Foundation

    The NPFDA (National Poultry & Food Distributors Association) Scholarship Foundation is entering its 38th year of scholarship assistance.  Every year, they award five $2,500.00 scholarships to students in the fields of poultry science, food science, agricultural economics/marketing, Food Marketing and related poultry and business fields of study.

    Interested students may apply for the 2017-2018 academic year scholarships by completing the attached application and sending it along with a 1 page letter explaining their career goals.   You will also need a letter of recommendation from a professor, department head, advisor or dean.

    The application, and letter of recommendation must reach the NPFDA office no later than May 31, 2017.  Transcripts MUST arrive by June 10th. Materials may arrive separately. Selection and notification will be completed by July 15th.

  31. Experience OSU for a Day Hosts & Fall Semester Schedules Needed

    Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit. If you were a host last semester, your schedules are needed!

    EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to class, the Oval, the Union, a room in Nosker House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Hosting is open to any CFAES student who has completed at least one semester of classes at the Columbus campus.   34. Call for Student Essays

    The DNMC Dairy Summit is an industry gathering of dairy producers and dairy industry professionals that meet annually for a weekend of fun and education.  The 10th annual renewal of this event will be held in late July – early August in a beautiful Colorado location. 

    DNMC is pleased to announce the 3rd edition of the Dairy Summit Student Essay Contest. The winner of this contest will be awarded a fully-paid trip, including travel costs to the meeting.  The student will have a spot on the program to present their winning essay. The student’s professor will be offered a complimentary conference registration and is strongly encouraged to attend. The winning essay writer will earn a $500 cash award.

    There will be two runners-up recognized at the meeting.  These two individuals will receive a $200 cash award and will be required to send a poster of their winning essay. All essays accepted for submission will be included in a bound volume to be provided to all conference attendees.  This compilation of essays will be a way for contestants to present themselves to as many as 20 western US dairy producers and 12 sponsoring companies for potential future employment opportunities.

    The objective of the essay is to clearly define a problem or issue in today’s dairy industry and details of how the student’s educational plans or career plans may be able to offer solutions to solve the problem or address the issue.  The essay should be two pages maximum. The essay should not be a resume or personal story of the student. The essays will be scored on a rubric that focusses on the clear statement of a problem/issue and how it will be addressed by the student.  Writing skills and overall professionalism of the essay will be included in the rubric.

    This contest is open to college seniors and master’s degree candidates.  Student’s designated as seniors for the Fall 2017 semester will be considered. Graduate students also need to be enrolled as a student for the Fall 2017 semester.

  35. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
