  1. CHAIRE/Wilds Short Course for Animal Science Students

    Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research and Education (CHAIRE) is hosting a short course for Animal Science Students. This short course will take place at the Wilds. It is an overnight conversation workshop with an overnight bush experience in the Wilds.

  2. Equine Classes Announcement

    There will be a change in equine courses offered this fall. Typically, AS 2301 (Behavior and Training, ground work only) and AS 3171 (Equine Health and Diseases) are offered in the fall. These two classes will not be offered in SP22 semester. In AU21, AS 2401 (Advanced Behavior and Training) and AS 3101 (Equine Facilities, Marketing, and Management) will be offered. Students interested in AS 2401 must schedule a riding test for permission to take the course. The test can be scheduled by contacting either Erica Holtsberry(.50) or Dan Rhodeback (.1). Any questions can be directed to Erica Holtsberry(.50). 

  3. Animal Science Elective

    Still Looking for Animal Science Major Elective Credits?

    The Human Dimension of Animal Sciences with Dr. Kelly George (ANIMSCI 5000, 3 credits, in-person) offer Tu/Th 2:20-3:40 autumn 2021, might be the course for you! In this course, we will explore the way people make decisions about the use and treatment of animals. We will also discuss ways to disseminate information and communicate with people of differing opinions. Finally, we will examine current research in these areas and apply all of these learned principles to a case study of your choice.   4. Greymeadows Equine Internship

    Greymeadows Farm is a breeding facility located in Cutler, Ohio specializing in producing and training Holsteiner/Welsh cross hunter ponies.  They have been offering an internship program since 2014.  

    They currently have two stallions, one that's older and still does a limited amount of field breeding and a 6 year old that does live cover as well as shipped semen.  4-6 foals are foaled in a typical year. 

    Interns gain experience in every element of the breeding farm including foaling, foal care, breeding, handling youngstock, starting/working with green horses, daily horse care and barn management.  Housing and a weekly stipend are provided as well.

    In addition to our traditional internship, they are also happy to work with your programs in a variety of other ways, such as individual projects for creating/implementing facility management plans, horse/pony and/or stallion marketing plans, social media plans, stallion management, field management, etc.

  6. Hagyard’s Veterinary Assistant Internship

  8. Seaboard Training Program

    Seaboard Foods has created a program for graduating seniors interested in food science, food industry management, meat science, animal science (or related) to get hands on training from senior leadership.

    There are three phases in the training program: 

    1. Production Trainer  – Learn about the key skills used on a production line by attending our Production Training Program. For example, a key skill would be how to keep your knife sharpened and maintain tools. After successful completion of the program, associates will be training new hires and current employees on best practices and safety.  
    2. Quality Assurance Technician – Become certified in HACCP, SQF, and/or PQA. Learn about food safety and quality control including critical control points, temperature monitoring, and identifying any food safety risks. Learn about how our chemistry and microbiology labs support our food safety department. This phase would include training for supporting food safety audits performed by USDA as well as GMPs (good manufacturing practices).  
    3. Production Management/ Leadership – Each associate will be paired with a manager to learn how to manage a line, respond to critical situations, and guide/ train employees on product specifications. 

    The average salary for this position is approximately $52, 900/ yr. We offer a sign-on bonus and tuition reimbursement. This position would be on B shift which starts at 3:00 pm and lasts anywhere from 9 – 10 hours.

  9. Hameau Farm Camp Counselor

    Hameua Farm is a small dairy farm in central PA and they run an agricultural education program for girls age 7-14 during the summer months.  This will be their 25th summer! 

    Hameau Farm is looking for staff for their summer 2021 program. A summer job at Hameau Farm is an excellent chance to see what small dairy production looks like first hand, as well as a chance to share your passion for dairy science and agriculture with the next generation of ag scientists.

    The program is small enough that they are thrilled to help staff members get involved in whatever aspects of the dairy industry excite them the most: milking, breeding, calf/heifer management, 4H, etc. They also have sheep, goats and pigs on the farm during the summer. Additionally, Audrey Gay Rodgers, the farm owner and summer program director, is a very well-connected farmer and a fabulous professional reference for future positions.

  12. Graduate Student Opportunities at North Dakota State University

    Graduate Student Opportunities in Livestock Microbial Ecology at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota, USA. 

    Two graduate student positions (one M.S. and one Ph.D. level) are available in Dr. Samat Amat’s lab in the Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU). Based on the selected candidate’s own research interests, background and future career goals, the student will be given the opportunity to develop and pursue research projects on one of the following topics: 1) understanding the role of the maternal microbiome on fetal and offspring development in cattle; 2) harnessing the reproductive tract microbiota to enhance fertility; 3) developing antimicrobial alternative strategies (e.g. bacteriophage, essential oil, and microbiota transplantation) to mitigate bovine respiratory disease and/or liver abscesses in finishing cattle. Thesis projects will be conducted in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Animal Sciences, NDSU. 

    The ideal candidates will be passionate about the livestock industry and microbiology and have a desire to make contributions to the livestock industry by developing microbiome-based strategies to address challenges (e.g. antimicrobial resistance, improving production efficiency, etc.) facing the livestock industry. Candidates having a background in animal science, microbiology, immunology, biology or veterinary science with previous experience in molecular biology and microbiology lab techniques and animal experimentation are desired. Candidates with bioinformatic analysis experience including amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing and RNA-seq with a desire to learn and perform molecular ecological network analysis, causal structural equation modeling and machine learning are also encouraged to apply. Experience with North American cattle production systems would be advantageous. 

    The successful candidates will receive competitive stipends and tuition waivers and can start their graduate programs in Summer 2021 or immediately.   13. West Texas A&M Master's Student

    The Department of Agricultural Sciences at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU) has partnered with Dairy Innovations, LLC in support of finding an individual looking to pursue a master’s degree. The masters student will attend WTAMU and will be funded by Allied Milk Producers Cooperative for two years. 

    The opportunities that will be presented to the prospective agriculture media and communication graduate students include: working with Dr. Troy Tarpley and Dr. Tanner Robertson to create, develop, and educate dairy farmers about the FARM program. The individual will be creating materials and coordinating training classes and programs for dairy farmers. They will also have the opportunity to work as the media specialist for the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences. The student will also assist in all WTAMU athletic sports camps. Prior to the events they will need to produce signage that promotes milk as a recovery drink. While at these events their duty will be to hand out milk and signage, promoting milk as a recovery drink.

  16. Manager of Operations at McGregor Research Center

    The 6,372 acre McGregor Research Center that serves as a beef cattle research station, providing a platform for long-term, large-scale projects with beef cows, stocker cattle, and confinement growing and finishing cattle. It supports an average cow herd of 900 cows, and the capability to graze 400 to 1,000 stocker calves dependent upon precipitation and season. Confinement-feeding facilities can support up to 600 head in commercial-style, soil-surfaced large pens. A Calan® gate facility with 120 individual gates, arranged in 30 pens of 4 each, and a GrowSafe® bunk system capable of supporting 180 head (one time) are available for detailed data collection.

  18. Angus Foundation Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship

    Applications are open for the Angus Foundation’s Commercial Cattlemen Scholarship program.   19. Poultry Science Scholarship

    Zinpro Corporation sponsors a $5,000.00 scholarship, to be awarded to a rising Junior or Senior undergraduate student in the field of Poultry Science. This scholarship will be awarded to a student belonging to gender, racial or ethnic groups that have been historically under-represented in the United States, based upon scholastic achievement and service and an interest in continuing to learn and promote the role of the poultry industry in feeding the world’s growing population.

  20. CentralStar Scholarship

    CentralStar’s 2021 scholarship program is live. Click here for details and the application. The deadline is June 1, 2021.

    Seven (7) winners will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Two of the scholarships are designated for technical-school or short-course students. Winners will receive notification of their award via e-mail in July or August. Checks are made payable to the university or technical school. If you’re a winner, expect the money to pay for your fall semester.

  21. Human Animal Interaction Group Studies Course

    Interested in exploring human-animal interactions in a different geographic and cultural setting? Then get ready for autumn 2021! Although we are not able to offer an international experience at this time, the Department of Animal Sciences will be offering a Group Studies course in the fall that will replace the international destination with the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

  22. CABS Route Changes

    In alignment with recommendations from the Safe Campus and Scientific Advisory Subgroup, Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) continues to limit occupancy to support safety and physical distancing guidelines. For students coming/going to our CFAES Columbus campus, please note:

    • There are only two routes right now during the day. Additional routes are available after 7 p.m.
    • MC-Med Center Express goes from West campus directly to the hub near the Herrick Drive Transit Hub and back but does not go past our Midwest bus stop.
    • BL-Buckeye Loop: goes from the Buckeye lot (near Ackerman and Fred Taylor) in a loop that goes to the 4-H Center stop (new), Midwest campus stop (Woody Hayes), RPAC, and then back via Olentangy and Ackerman. It runs every 5 minutes during the day.

    We are working with CABS to possibly expand routes in the coming weeks.   23. CFAES Columbus Campus Library and Common Spaces

    The CFAES Columbus campus Library will be open Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Information about the current services offered is available at https://library.osu.edu/locations/faes. The library will reopen for the semester on January 25th.

  24. Libraries on Campus

    The Libraries are currently offering contact-free pickup by appointment at Thompson Library only, and document delivery through Interlibrary Services.  To see a full list of librries and their hours, see here.

    The Libraries will reopen to users on January 25, and will aim to provide services that support your teaching, learning and research in a safe and healthy environment.  Here’s what that will look like:

    Using the Libraries’ space: 

    ·         The Veterinary Medicine Library, as well as most department libraries, will operate on a modified schedule of 10am-4pm, Monday-Friday.  Thompson and 18th Avenue Libraries will maintain normal hours. Hours are subject to change. Please visit library.osu.edu for current information.

    ·         Masks are required in all University Libraries facilities.

    ·         Library users are asked to maintain a safe, physical distance of six feet apart. We have spaced out seating in our common areas and closed our group study rooms to help make this possible.

    ·         Eating and drinking are not permitted. 

    ·         The Veterinary Medicine Library’s space will have restricted seating and will primarily be used for classroom and exam space.  You can also pick up reserved books and use our computers, printers, copiers and scanners.  We ask that you sanitize surfaces after use.

    Using the Libraries’ materials:

    ·         The book stacks will remain closed to the public. Materials must be requested through the Library Catalog. Only University Libraries staff may remove books from shelves. Any books brought to the circulation desk by visitors will have to be quarantined and unavailable for up to five days.

    ·         Materials you request can be picked up at a library circulation desk, or sent to your Columbus campus office. 

    ·         Returned materials will be quarantined for five days and will remain checked out on your account until quarantine is complete and they have been checked in.

    ·         Due to quarantine, OhioLINK and Interlibrary Loan requests will be delayed. 

    ·         Print course reserves and textbooks will circulate for extended loan periods, rather than two hours or in-library use.

    ·         Requests for new materials will take longer than normal to process.

     

  25. Animal Sciences COVID Hours

    The large majority of our faculty and staff will be telecommuting during the pandemic, which means the best way to get assistance is to email your advisor or instructors with questions, or to set up a Zoom or phone call.  There will be a contact directory of email and phone # of all faculty and staff posted at the main office (AS 110).  However, we will have administrative assistants that will be in on the following days/times & locations:

    • Tuesday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110)
    • Thursday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110 & AS 221)
    • Friday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110)

    All buildings on campus have a directional flow that you must follow:

    Animal Sciences Building 

    • Entrance door – south between Animal Science and Parker Food Science Buildings
    • Exit door - any available exit other than designated entrance
    • South stairway to ascend stairs to floors above
    • North stairway to descend  stairs
    • Lobby area – seating will be revised to ensure social distancing (7 chairs out of 14 will be removed)

  26. Campus Updates and Support

    The Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website is continually updated with the most current information about the university's return to campus and navigating the term.  This site features resources for accommodations related to COVID-19, daily health checks, living on campus, dining on campus, events and gatherings, mental health and wellness, personal protection, recreation, testing and quarantines, transportation, and more.

  27. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

    The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.
