  1. Grow by FarmHer

    Attention women in agriculture programs!

  2. CFAES Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research & Education (CHAIRE) Kick-Off Event

    Please join us for an evening of food and fun as we introduce you to the new CFAES Center for Human-Animal Interactions Research and Education (CHAIRE). CHAIRE is a new center in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences committed to expanding our knowledge of the interrelationships between people, animals, and the environment.

  3. DEC 4th PVMA FUNDRAISER AT CAZUELAS!

    Come support the OSU Pre-Veterinary Medical Association!

    Present the attached flyer at Cazuelas Grill on Monday December 4th and a portion of the proceeds will go back to Ohio State’s Pre-Vet Club.

    Buckeye Parasitology Club is accepting new members! This club includes undergraduates, graduate and professional students. Anyone with an interest in parasites (veterinary or human) is welcome to join.   7. Zoetis Internship Opportunities

  8. Kennel Technician Position Available

    The Vet Clinic in Worthington is looking for a part time Kennel Technician on Monday evenings, Friday evenings, Saturday evenings, and Sundays (AM and PM or one of the two shifts- negotiable!). Mon, Fri, and Sat would include cleaning the hospital at the end of the day, plus caring for any pets that are in boarding or hospitalized. This may include feeding, walking, medicating, or any other necessary care. Sundays would only require caring for the animals, no cleaning. The position averages 10-12 hours per week, and pay starts at $8.65 per hour.   9. 4-H Animal Sciences Student Intern

    There is a 4-H student internship position available at Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. The postion responsibilities include;

    • Assist in the development and preparation of Skillathon, Judging Contest, and Quiz Bowl materials for the 2018 Ohio State Fair (OSF) Animal Science Youth Events
    • Assist with set-up, registration, implementation, scoring, and awards of the above youth events
    • Assist in preparation of the 2018 OSF Report of Results for Animal Sciences Event

    The ideal candidate has knowledge of animal skillathons and experience taking animal projects are preferred. Likewise, first or second-year students are preferred (with an interest in potentially continuing in this position for a second year as lead intern).   10. USMARC 2018 Summer Undergraduate Internship Program

    The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), located in Clay Center, Nebraska, will be sponsoring a 2018 Summer Research Internship Program for undergraduate students. They have been exploring opportunities to strengthen ties between scientists at USMARC and faculty, staff, and students at various colleges and universities throughout the country. This program, at the undergraduate level, is an opportunity to guide students into the field of research.

    Below is a link to the USMARC Careers page with information about the 2018 program and the application process, along with the timeline for submission of applications. There are projects representing all research units: Genetics, Breeding, and Animal Health; Meat Safety and Quality; Nutrition & Environmental Management; and Reproduction.     Application packages must be postmarked by February 5, 2018.   11. Vita Plus Dairy Nutrition and Management Fellowship

    Applications are now being accepted for the Vita Plus Dairy Nutrition and Management Fellowship.
     
    As the dairies in our market area get more sophisticated, the skills to service their needs as a nutritional consultant increase as well. Their field nutritionists are highly skilled and technologically savvy – built greatly on experience. The challenge for a new college graduate to step into the role of dairy nutritionist and farm consultant is substantial.
     
    Many graduates welcome additional training after completing a bachelor’s degree to prepare them for future employment in this dairy consulting role. However, the only graduate funds available within a university system are in support of a focused research program.
     
    Vita Plus is dedicated to helping students prepare for a career in dairy consulting. By working cooperatively with the Department of Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, they can offer a balance of classroom instruction, practical dairy research experience and additional training in an employee-owned feed company. Students selected for this fellowship work side-by-side with both the scientists and instructors at the prestigious University of Wisconsin, but also with the dairy nutritionists at Vita Plus. The student has a college advisor as well as an advisor/mentor at Vita Plus. As a result, the student can not only learn in the classroom and laboratory, but also apply that knowledge in real-life situations on the farm, working with Vita Plus staff. This is a unique opportunity to prepare for a career in dairy consulting.
     
    The details are on the attachment, but ,in summary, Vita Plus awards a fellowship every two years. They are now recruiting for the sixth student in this program to start in the fall of 2018. The student will attend classes at UW-Madison for three semesters and gain industry experience with Vita Plus on approximately a 35% full-time equivalency basis during the 18-month period. The student will be involved in a dairy science research project.
     
    Applications must be submitted before February 1, 2018. The selection will be made shortly thereafter.
     
  12. Dr. Arruda Research Opportunity

    Dr. Andréia Gonçalves Arruda is looking for a graduate student (MS degree) to work on a project related to the use of novel technologies for internal and external swine farm biosecurity. This student must have a Bachelor degree in Animal Science and/ or DVM degree. International students are required to take the GRE and TOEFL exams.
     
    The ideal candidate is eager to learn, able to work independently, has good communication skills, and is interested in learning more about epidemiology, data analysis and swine management/ health. Someone that likes and is interested in technology would be a strong candidate.
     
    The starting date would be January 2018. Graduate student to be located in Columbus, Ohio, USA at the Veterinary Preventive Medicine Department, The Ohio State University.

  13. Fellowships for Undergraduate STEM

    Fellowships are available to undergraduate students of junior or senior standing in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field who have successfully completed two years of East Asian language study at the college level. Summer 2018 fellowships are expected to cover $5,000 in tuition and fees and also provide a $2,500 stipend. Academic Year 2018-2019 fellowships are expected to contribute $10,000 towards tuition and fees and also provide a $5,000 stipend. Subject to approval, FLAS fellowships may also be used for foreign language and area studies at other U.S. or foreign institutions.   16. Tyson Foods 2018 Summer Internships

    Tyson R&D Foods is accepting applications to fill 7 internship postions for summer 2018. This internship will provide hands-on experiences and allow individuals to gain mentorship from highly experiences industry professionals. They are looking for Food Science and Meat Science (Animal Science with Meat Science emphasis) undergraduates (who are planning to go to graduate school) and current graduate students. If you are and undergraduate and plan on submitting an application or resume, be sure to include that you plan on going to graduate school.

  17. Dairy Focused Commercial Sales Intern

    Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is looking for a summer commercial dairy intern. The intern will be assigned a sales mentor that they will ride with to become acclimated to the sales climate. They will call on direct producers and dealers in the assigned territory and become involved in data collection and market research work. The intern may be assigned a special project to complete during the internship period.

    They are interested in candidates that have a desire to pursue a career in Sales and/or Management that have had exposure to the agricultural field, and are willing to relocate after graduation. Candidates must be at least sophomore status with an overall GPA of 2.8 or higher, have a passion and interest in the feed industry, and are authorized to work within the United States. Candidates must have the ability to lift 50 lbs regularly, manage vehicle confinement for long periods of time, and manage on-the-farm conditions. Successful candidates will have superior verbal and written communication skills and be self-motivated with the ability to manage time and priorities.

  18. Hilmar Dairy Farm Internship

  19. CPD Mounted Internship Opportunity

    The Columbus Division of Police is currently looking for students interested in an internship with our Mounted Unit during the Spring Semester. Internships are voluntary, non-paid positions and are intended for students that are seeking academic credit. Due to the confidential nature of their work those students chosen to be considered will receive and be required to complete an in-depth Personal History Questionnaire, undergo a criminal background check and take a polygraph examination.The job duties are listed below:

    • Cleaning horse stalls, barn, turnouts, arenas and horses
    •  Feeding, bathing, saddling horses
    •  Herd management

  20. Sitz Angus 2018 Internship

    Sitz Angus is looking for two types of interns: ranch and farm. 

    Ranch interns may be involved with feedlot/yard operations, backgrounding, heifer development, maternal herd management, terminal herd management, and summer calving herd management. Interns also may assist with electronic identification, artificial insemination and records management. All interns will receive an introduction to range management and ranch financial management. In addition, the intern will be expected to do seasonal tasks, such as pivot irrigating and meadow haying operations in the fall. 

    Farm interns may be involved with seasonal tasks, including planting, cultivating, pivot irrigation, and haying operations. Interns may also get exposure to crop scouting. All interns will receive an introduction to farm management and farm financial management. 


    Housing is provided for the interns. At one ranch it is a bunkhouse and at the other ranch the housing is a cabin. The typical work schedule is 6 1/2 days on, with one day off. Being horseback is an option, but not a requirement. One ranch is in Harrison, Montana, which is a very small town with limited amount of things to do for fun unless you travel to Bozeman, Montana. The other ranch is in Dillon, Montana which is a college town, so there are many other opportunities for interns to find things to do on their days off.

    Interns are provided access to a vehicle and are paid a salary with bonus potential if they go above and beyond the outlined duties.

  21. Dairy Research Internship

    As a research intern, students will be responsible for coordinating research trials and collecting data on the health and growth of young calves.     • Work closely with the Nurture Research Center staff and assist with the execution of calf research protocols,
    • Collect samples and data from young dairy calves, including (but not limited to) blood, urine, feces, weight, height and other data,
    • Order research supplies and prepare treatments as outlined by protocol,
    • Enter, organize and manage large data sets,
    • Learn how to plate radial immunodiffusion assays and evaluate passive transfer or immunity,
    • Provide critical input to the research and development team.

  27. Montana Wool Lab Manager/Graduate Assistant

    This is a full-time position/graduate program associated with the activities and mission of the Montana Wool Laboratory at Montana State University. The position pays $40,000/year with full MSU benefits including a partial tuition waiver. This position is an active component of MSU’s sheep research, teaching, and extension programs.

    This person will be responsible for the development and implementation of laboratory services, research, and outreach programs related to the Montana Wool Laboratory and its externally funded research and outreach initiatives. In many cases, this individual will be responsible for performing assigned duties in the absence of direct supervision.

    A BS in animal science or related field is required and an MS preferred. Graduate research associated with this position will be in the area of sheep and wool production.   31. Program Coordinator III – Dairy Farm Manager

    The Department of Animal Science under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for a Program Coordinator III – Dairy Farm Manager. The Dairy Farm is a research farm working with external industry partners, vendors, and a diverse group of faculty, and approximately 40 staff and students. The ISU Dairy Farm, is a $15 million complex with an operating budget of approximately $3 million.The job posting is at: https://www.iastatejobs.com/postings/28617. 

    The Dairy Farm Manager reports directly to the Animal Science Farm Director. This position is responsible for overall leadership, direction, and management of the ISU Dairy Farm, including the overall herd health and modern and effective production practices for the operation. The Dairy Farm Manager is fully accountable for developing, implementing, and meeting facility safety, quality, environment, cost, and operation plan objectives. Other responsibilities include implementing and assuring alignment with business strategies, processes, and programs to ensure compliance with ISU and regulatory requirements related to: food safety, employee safety, security, environmental, and human resource compliance. 

    This position will collaborate with faculty on a variety of unique research and teaching projects, coordinate details for scientific data collection, and establish appropriate protocols. The manager will also hire and supervise farm employees, and train undergraduate and graduate students in production and research procedures and methods such as data collection, statistical design, and analyses of experience. Further, the position will develop and analyze budgets, make modifications to maximize efficiency, and write reports and summaries relating to data and project activities.

    The successful candidate will possess a high level of business acumen in addition to agriculture knowledge in the area of animal science, veterinary science, and animal husbandry including disease management, nutrition, lactation, behavior, breeding, and genetics. They will be self-motivated and be able to work independently along with working productively in a team setting. Effective written and interpersonal communication skills are critical to effectively interact with diverse staff, faculty, and students.     Position Overview: The Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) will have the primary responsibility for overseeing the animal husbandry on a day-to-day and study-to-study basis. The LAT will perform daily animal care and daily routine cleaning of labs and offices. Additionally, the LAT will perform study-specific skill sets as required. These skill sets may be, but not limited to, study room set-up, environmental logs, animal logs, shipping and handling, data collection, and quality control of data. The LAT will be trained and signed off on all aspects of the job description, as well as the GLP’s. The LAT is responsible for reading and following all pertinent SOPs related to the job description and facility.

    Essential Job Functions:

    · Husbandry for all animals in the facility, including appropriate environmental conditions.

    Funding is available to students studying in animal sciences or a related discipline to conduct research with faculty located in Columbus and at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Ohio.   35. Available Position for Applied Dairy Nutrition Graduate Research Assistant

    A PhD and/or MS graduate research assistant position(s) is available in Dr. Jackie Boerman’s at Purdue University to pursue projects related to applied dairy cattle nutrition.

    A strong undergraduate (or Master’s degree) with a background in Animal Science, Biology or related majors is required, with some prior research experience preferred. Research will be focused on the presentation of diets impact on intake and production and/or nutritionally manipulating energy partitioning in lactating dairy cattle.

    A strong candidate will have a competitive GPA and GRE score, experience handling dairy cattle, and previous lab experience. Anticipated start date is January, 2018 and/or August, 2018.

  37. CFAES Transcript Designation

    CFAES has a new transcript designation available to recognize student efforts to internationalize their OSU experience. This new designation is called the Global Option (GO). 

    The CFAES GO has four basic components:

    • Education Abroad or International Student Status
    • Taking a course related to your major or minor (see list) that is international in nature
    • Advanced international learning: A second study abroad, or the second set of 3 credit hours for a program that awards 6+ hours, or participate in an international research project, internship or Service Learning experience, or minor in a program that is international in nature, or prove at least minor-level proficiency in a non-English language
    • Complete the Global Option Capstone course (FAES 4580) at some point after reaching rank 4 (exceptions allowed for special circumstances such as Agriscience Ed students who are not able to take any additional courses their final year)

    Are you a first year commuter student interested in making new friends? The commuter mentoring program is offered to first year commuter students and helps them engage more with campus activities and have an overall better experience at OSU. Commuter liaisons serves as a resource for mentees to go to with all questions and concerns, as well as, connects mentees with campus resources and events while providing regular check-ins and reflections with mentees.

  41. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
