Student Newsletter: February 22, 2016

Do you miss your 4-H/FFA days of showmanship competition? Do you want to have a friendly competition amongst your friends and peers? Have you ever wanted to learn how to show a heifer, hog, sheep, or horse? Then the Little International showmanship competition is for you! Little will be taking place April 16th at the hog and equine facilities starting at 8am. The categories that will be shown are the following: pigs, sheep, guys and gals lead, cattle, and horses. Each species with have an experienced and inexperienced division. Each animal must be worked with a minimum of five times in order to be eligible for the show. In addition to showmanship skills, you also have the chance to showcase your cooking skills with the ham and corned beef competition. The Wilds is currently offering two seasonal positions in their Education department:
Conservation Educators teach programs for schools, youth groups, families and adults. This position requires staff to work a flexible schedule, including working weekends and occasionally staying overnight at the Wilds. All staff will be required to drive a school bus during tours (training will be provided). This position will begin March 14th and end May 29th.

WildeCamp Educators are counselors for the WildeCamp program. WildeCamp is a residential camp experience for children ages 8-18. Counselors spend week long periods living at WildeCamp with the campers. They will teach educational lessons, participate in outdoor activities (swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc.) and be responsible for creating fun and memorable opportunities for EVERY child. This position will begin on May 30th to August 7th.

Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC is now accepting applications for their summer internship through March 15. Southern Swiss operates an on-farm creamery alongside a dairy with registered Brown Swiss cows. The document containing additional information about the internship was left out of the email, so you may direct any inquiries here.

Cosi is offering positions as a Summer Animal Specialist Intern. Students will be responsible for providing hands-on care for animals, developing and implementing enrichment methods for the animals. This would be a great resume builder for any Zoology or Animal Science major. Check out the attachment for more details.

Cosi also has volunteer opportunities in Guest Relations for those interested. Duties include interacting with guests by answering questions and assisting with their needs, therefore excellent communications skills are a must. For more information, please view the attachment.

The James W. Babcock Internship Program for American Students is an opportunity for American undergraduate and graduate students to experience hands-on animal husbandry, participate in the delivery of classes and field trips, or take part in research and monitoring activities within various conservation projects. Positions are available in in programs concentrating on conservation, research, marine operations and education. See the attached document for contact information or go to their website here. Applications are due March 15.

The Ohio Cattlemen's Association and Ohio Beef Council offers many internships for college students throughout the year. A scholarship will be awarded to each intern. Each intern also has the opportunity to earn credit while completing the internship. Internships are available for the summer and fall. For information on the positions, please view the attachment.

Safari Adventures at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, OH is looking for strongly motivated and hard working individuals ready for a hands on experience in a AZA accredited zoo. During the course of the internship, students will have the opportunity to work with many different types of animals including giraffes, kangaroos, zebra, lemurs, tiger cubs, and so much more. Attached is the description of what the internship will entail, along with the application and a previous intern’s letter describing her past experience with our program. The U.S. Trotting Association is going to have 2 internships next summer in our Information & Research Department.  Interns will perform tasks related to the gathering, compilation, and dissemination of racing and breeding data for the USTA, its members and customers. Responsible for providing quality assurance as it relates to the performance data transmitted to the USTA by its member tracks and other registries. The USTA requires a minimum of one year college education in an equine studies or related program, extensive harness racing experience, and a brief training period, required at USTA offices in Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio Poultry Association (OPA) is a dynamic organization representing Ohio’s egg, turkey and chicken farms, processing and allied industries. Caring for consumers and Ohio poultry farms by providing leadership to responsibly produce safe, affordable, and wholesome food is OPA's prime mission. An integral part of the mission is providing for bird health programs. OPA is seeking a qualified individual who is energetic and hard working to join their Bird Health team as Program Manager. Clear Creek Ranch is looking for 8 Individuals to help guide horseback rides in the mountains of Burnsville, North Carolina. The season runs from March to December. Responsible for care and maintenance of 50+ herd which includes feeding, mucking stalls, doctoring horses, grooming, saddling, leading trail rides and entertaining guests during evening activities. Wranglers should be able to handle guests of all riding experiences, from kids to adults, and beginners to advanced. Check out the flyer for more information.

The Technical Service Representative at Osborne Industries Inc is responsible for the installation, commissioning and field service of Osborne Industries Automated Swine Equipment. This position provides telephone and online customer support and provides training to customers on the proper use and operation of the equipment. Extensive travel is required both domestic and abroad. Skills in basic electricity to understand and troubleshoot electronics desired. Please view the attachment for application details.

The Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance (MISA) of the Food Processing Suppliers Association will be awarding seven $10,000 scholarships this year to deserving students studying the meat sciences at universities across the country.  Last year they were awarded to students at Colorado State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Iowa State. Applications can be found online. The deadline for the scholarship submission is May 1. 

The Roy A. Wallace BIF Memorial Fund was established to honor the life and career of Roy A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace worked for Select Sires for 40 years, serving as vice-president of beef programs and devoted his life to beef-cattle improvement. This scholarship was established to encourage young men and women interested in beef cattle improvement to pursue those interests as Mr. Wallace did, with dedication and passion. Two scholarships will be offered in the amount of $1250 each. One will be awarded to a student currently enrolled as an undergraduate and one will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctoral program. The Ohio Holstein Women’s Scholarship is dedicated to the encouragement of deserving and qualified persons with a high school degree and with a dairy background to obtain an Associates, Bachelor’s or Masters Degree, or to start-up and continue in the dairy business. Applicants may be male or female and must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25. Please view the attachment for further details and requirements. Applications may be found here and must be submitted by February 26.

In addition to an annual scholarship award of $2,500 for up to two years, the Cargill Global Scholars Program provides leadership development opportunities through seminars, networking events, and a one-on-one mentoring program with executives from Cargill. These enrichment activities have been designed to help foster and enhance the Cargill Global Scholars’ leadership potential and critical thinking skills, and equip them with the tools necessary for becoming global leaders and decisions makers.

Students specializing in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply: Agriculture Related Field, Business, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Food Science, International Relations, Political Science, and Public Policy

A Day in the Life of a Buckeye is a program that offers a one-on-one experience for inner city and Appalachian area high school sophomores and juniors to experience life at The Ohio State University, and college in general, for a day. This visit, hosted by currently enrolled undergraduate students, often includes attending classes, interacting with faculty and staff, eating in campus-area dining facilities, visiting the library and recreational facilities, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. If being a host is right up your alley, be sure to sign up online today!

All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
