  1. Master in Plant Health Management

    Attached is a flyer with info for a GRA opportunity for the Master in Plant Health Management.  The department is seeking someone with an interest and background in Ohio agriculture and someone with an interest and skills for working in OSU Extension.  The student in this position would be well prepared to apply for OSU Extension Educator positions. Review of applications will begin March 31.

  2. Lecture Series in Animal Breeding

    Do you have an interest in genetics?  Don’t miss out on this seminar presentation geared for students by Dr. Heather Huson, a young faculty member from Cornell University, on Thursday, March 3rd at 6:30 pm in AS 212.  Dr. Huson has a very interesting background as an avid sled dog racer, but whose research focus is in dairy cattle and goat genetics. Take advantage of the networking opportunity and enjoy some free food!

  3. Little International Competition

    Do you miss your 4-H/FFA days of showmanship competition? Do you want to have a friendly competition amongst your friends and peers? Have you ever wanted to learn how to show a heifer, hog, sheep, or horse? Then the Little International showmanship competition is for you! Little will be taking place April 16th at the hog and equine facilities starting at 8am. The categories that will be shown are the following: pigs, sheep, guys and gals lead, cattle, and horses. Each species with have an experienced and inexperienced division. Each animal must be worked with a minimum of five times in order to be eligible for the show. In addition to showmanship skills, you also have the chance to showcase your cooking skills with the ham and corned beef competition.   4. Putting Yourself in Employers Shoes

    Please join for an interactive presentation about "Putting Yourself in Employers’ Shoes." Gain insight and perspective about how employers assess the “right” fit and gather tips to assist you to become the “best” fit. This presentation will occur on February 22nd, 5-6PM at the Younkin Success Center room 220. Malka Bendor and Melissa Holcomb, Career Strategists at JFS, will be our guest speakers.

    This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop that will help you learn strategies for securing positions. Food and drinks will be provided and ALL students are welcome to attend! Please see the attached flyer and submit your RSVP-HERE!   5. The Wilds Seasonal Positions

    The Wilds is currently offering two seasonal positions in their Education department:
    Conservation Educators teach programs for schools, youth groups, families and adults. This position requires staff to work a flexible schedule, including working weekends and occasionally staying overnight at the Wilds. All staff will be required to drive a school bus during tours (training will be provided). This position will begin March 14th and end May 29th.

    WildeCamp Educators are counselors for the WildeCamp program. WildeCamp is a residential camp experience for children ages 8-18. Counselors spend week long periods living at WildeCamp with the campers. They will teach educational lessons, participate in outdoor activities (swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc.) and be responsible for creating fun and memorable opportunities for EVERY child. This position will begin on May 30th to August 7th.

  6. Loper Summer Internship

    Winding Creeks equine farm is currently offering positions for their summer internship program from May 16 - August 7. Please view the attachment for full details as well as contact information.

  7. Southern Swiss Internship

    Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC is now accepting applications for their summer internship through March 15. Southern Swiss operates an on-farm creamery alongside a dairy with registered Brown Swiss cows. The document containing additional information about the internship was left out of the email, so you may direct any inquiries here.

  8. Ohio Poultry Internship

    The Ohio poultry industry is dynamic and growing. There will be an increased need for a well-qualified work force in the near future. The goal of this internship is to expose undergraduate students to the different segments of Ohio’s Poultry Industry with hopes that the student will then select one area to further explore in a future internship. Successful candidates will work three to four weeks at each of the following: Ohio Broiler Operation, Ohio Turkey Operation, Ohio Egg Operation. Time with each of these will include on farm, processing and operational experience.

    Biosecurity is a major consideration when moving employees and visitors from farm to farm. Therefore, there will be approximately one-week between each of the farm located experiences. This week will be spent with the Ohio Poultry Association (OPA) learning about segments of the industry. OPA experiences will include bird health (NPIP) and welfare programs, industry advocacy, consumer education and promotion.

    The Ohio Poultry Association facilitates this program. Overall program supervisor is Jim Chakeres, Executive Vice President. Each poultry operation will be providing one point of contact for the intern. Those interested in this internship should send a cover letter and resume to Mr. Chakeres.

  9. Cosi Internship and Volunteer Opportunities

    Cosi is offering positions as a Summer Animal Specialist Intern. Students will be responsible for providing hands-on care for animals, developing and implementing enrichment methods for the animals. This would be a great resume builder for any Zoology or Animal Science major. Check out the attachment for more details.

    Cosi also has volunteer opportunities in Guest Relations for those interested. Duties include interacting with guests by answering questions and assisting with their needs, therefore excellent communications skills are a must. For more information, please view the attachment.

  10. 4-H Animal Sciences Student Intern

    Nationwide and the Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center is looking for a 4-H Animal Sciences Student Intern to assist with the 2016 Ohio State Fair Youth Events from April 11th to August 14th. An intern will learn about livestock, companion, and performance animals by preparing materials to inform and challenge those at varying age levels. See the attached document for information regarding wage, qualifications, and responsibilities. If interested, send your resume to Keegan Gay by Friday March 11th at the latest.

  11. James W. Babcock Internship Program for American Students

    The James W. Babcock Internship Program for American Students is an opportunity for American undergraduate and graduate students to experience hands-on animal husbandry, participate in the delivery of classes and field trips, or take part in research and monitoring activities within various conservation projects. Positions are available in in programs concentrating on conservation, research, marine operations and education. See the attached document for contact information or go to their website here.   12. Unique Employment Opportunity

    Avery Animal Hospital is a busy, five doctor veterinary practice in Hilliard, Ohio. This is an opening in their 1 bedroom apartment for a undergraduate pre-veterinary student or 1st year veterinary student. The office does not charge rent and in return requires you to work night and weekend treatments of all hospitalized patients. You will also be responsible for mopping floors each night and once on weekends. It is required that you work (paid) a minimum of 10hrs per week so the office can carry workman’s compensation for you. This is an excellent opportunity to gain more hands on experience in the area of small animal medicine. Interested candidates should email Laura White for more details.

  13. Ohio Cattlemen's and Ohio Beef Council Internships

    The Ohio Cattlemen's Association and Ohio Beef Council offers many internships for college students throughout the year. A scholarship will be awarded to each intern. Each intern also has the opportunity to earn credit while completing the internship. Internships are available for the summer and fall. For information on the positions, please view the attachment.

  14. Laboratory Animal Technician

    QTest Labs is seeking 4-5 students to work a few hours a day as a Laboratory Animal Technician. Students will have the primary responsibility for overseeing the animal husbandry on a day-to-day and study-to-study basis, perform daily animal care and daily routine cleaning of labs and offices, and perform study-specific skill sets as required.   15. Kalahari Safari Adventure Internship

    Safari Adventures at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, OH is looking for strongly motivated and hard working individuals ready for a hands on experience in a AZA accredited zoo. During the course of the internship, students will have the opportunity to work with many different types of animals including giraffes, kangaroos, zebra, lemurs, tiger cubs, and so much more. Attached is the description of what the internship will entail, along with the application and a previous intern’s letter describing her past experience with our program.   16. Wild Horse Rescue Internship

    Wild Horse Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit public charity located on a rural McDermott property in Scioto County, Ohio. Many of the horses have been abused or starved at one point in their lives and need human interaction.  Wild Horse Rescue uses natural horsemanship methods along understanding herd behavior to see how the horses react to pressure.  The intern will be supervised and assisted when needed for safety purposes. The intern should live in the area and provide their own transportation to and from the facility.  This is an unpaid opportunity, but the intern will gain benefits that extend to knowledge of equine handling and behavior that has been gained from more than 55 years of experience working with troubled horses.  Work schedules would be flexible.

  17. USTA Internship

    The U.S. Trotting Association is going to have 2 internships next summer in our Information & Research Department.  Interns will perform tasks related to the gathering, compilation, and dissemination of racing and breeding data for the USTA, its members and customers. Responsible for providing quality assurance as it relates to the performance data transmitted to the USTA by its member tracks and other registries. The USTA requires a minimum of one year college education in an equine studies or related program, extensive harness racing experience, and a brief training period, required at USTA offices in Columbus, Ohio.   21. Wranglers Needed

    Clear Creek Ranch is looking for 8 Individuals to help guide horseback rides in the mountains of Burnsville, North Carolina. The season runs from March to December. Responsible for care and maintenance of 50+ herd which includes feeding, mucking stalls, doctoring horses, grooming, saddling, leading trail rides and entertaining guests during evening activities. Wranglers should be able to handle guests of all riding experiences, from kids to adults, and beginners to advanced. Check out the flyer for more information.

  22. Calf Ranch General Manager

    A progressive calf ranch in the upper mid-west is looking for a general manager. Responsibilities would include oversight of daily activities, working with employee management, training and other various roles. Those interested should contact Ann Hoskins via email for more information. 

  23. Tech Services Representative

    The Technical Service Representative at Osborne Industries Inc is responsible for the installation, commissioning and field service of Osborne Industries Automated Swine Equipment. This position provides telephone and online customer support and provides training to customers on the proper use and operation of the equipment. Extensive travel is required both domestic and abroad. Skills in basic electricity to understand and troubleshoot electronics desired. Please view the attachment for application details.

  24. Select Sires Positions

    Select Sires, Inc. is seeking Livestock Technicians, Shipping Technicians and Processing Technicians at multiple locations. Work schedules and duties vary per facility for these non-exempt positions and employees are paid hourly wages. All work schedules are subject to change to meet departmental needs.   25. MISA Scholarship

    The Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance (MISA) of the Food Processing Suppliers Association will be awarding seven $10,000 scholarships this year to deserving students studying the meat sciences at universities across the country.  Last year they were awarded to students at Colorado State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Iowa State. Applications can be found online. The deadline for the scholarship submission is May 1

  26. North American Meat Institute Scholarship

    Since its inception in 1985, the North American Meat Institute (NAMI) Scholarship Foundation has granted tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to exceptional undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the Animal, Meat and Food Sciences. The goal of the Foundation is to create a self-perpetuating endowment that will fund scholarships well into the 21st Century.

    Undergraduates majoring in Animal/Meat/Food Science with an orientation toward the post harvest processing of meat and poultry food products or enrolled in a Culinary (Art) Science program, are encouraged to apply.   27. Roy Wallace Beef Improvement Federation Memorial Scholarship

    The Roy A. Wallace BIF Memorial Fund was established to honor the life and career of Roy A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace worked for Select Sires for 40 years, serving as vice-president of beef programs and devoted his life to beef-cattle improvement. This scholarship was established to encourage young men and women interested in beef cattle improvement to pursue those interests as Mr. Wallace did, with dedication and passion. Two scholarships will be offered in the amount of $1250 each. One will be awarded to a student currently enrolled as an undergraduate and one will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctoral program.   28. NDPRB Scholarship

    National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDPRB), through Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), annually awards up to 11 $2,500 scholarships to eligible undergraduate students (sophomore through senior) enrolled in college/university programs that emphasize dairy and is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2016-2017 school year.  Check out the attachment for a copy of the application and scholarship details.  Information can also be found on their website. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 22.

  29. Ohio Holstein Women's Scholarship

    The Ohio Holstein Women’s Scholarship is dedicated to the encouragement of deserving and qualified persons with a high school degree and with a dairy background to obtain an Associates, Bachelor’s or Masters Degree, or to start-up and continue in the dairy business. Applicants may be male or female and must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25. Please view the attachment for further details and requirements. Applications may be found here and must be submitted by February 26.

  30. ADM Ag Services Scholarships

    Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), a world leader in agricultural processing, is awarding $1,000 scholarships to select college students who plan to enter an operations career in an ag-related field.
    To be considered for a scholarship, students must:
    ·         Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
    ·         Be a U.S. citizen
    Submit the following items by March 1, 2016:
    – A resume
    – A statement outlining personal and professional goals (no more than 500 words)
    – A statement demonstrating interest in pursuing an ag-operations career at ADM.

  31. Cargill Global Scholars Program

    Cargill has deeply valued their partnership with Ohio State University over the past three years of the program and hopes to continue this partnership in the program’s fourth year. As a partner university, first and second year undergraduate students who demonstrate exemplary academic achievement, leadership potential and study in a field relevant to Cargill’s world of food, agriculture and risk management are eligible to apply for this program.

    In addition to an annual scholarship award of $2,500 for up to two years, the Cargill Global Scholars Program provides leadership development opportunities through seminars, networking events, and a one-on-one mentoring program with executives from Cargill. These enrichment activities have been designed to help foster and enhance the Cargill Global Scholars’ leadership potential and critical thinking skills, and equip them with the tools necessary for becoming global leaders and decisions makers.

    Students specializing in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply: Agriculture Related Field, Business, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Food Science, International Relations, Political Science, and Public Policy

  32. Waldock Brothers Award

    The Waldock Brothers Award recognizes an Outstanding Senior in Animal Sciences based on criteria including scholarship, leadership, and service to the Department of Animal Sciences, the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, The Ohio State University and the communities served. The award originates with the Waldock Brothers, Jack and Bill, and recognized their dedication to high-quality education within the Department of Animal Sciences. The application can be found in the following attachment. Please type the application and return to Dr. Steve Moeller via email by February 29.

    The Annual Department of Animal Sciences Recognition will be held on the evening of Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, on the Columbus Campus. All applicants and their parents are encouraged to attend. Banquet tickets will be provided to the Waldock Award Recipient. Parents and friends can purchase tickets (cost to be determined).

  33. A Day in the Life of a Buckeye

    A Day in the Life of a Buckeye is a program that offers a one-on-one experience for inner city and Appalachian area high school sophomores and juniors to experience life at The Ohio State University, and college in general, for a day. This visit, hosted by currently enrolled undergraduate students, often includes attending classes, interacting with faculty and staff, eating in campus-area dining facilities, visiting the library and recreational facilities, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. If being a host is right up your alley, be sure to sign up online today!

  34. Experience OSU for a Day Hosts Needed

    Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.

    EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a dorm room, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow).   35. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

  36. CFAES Mental Health Counselor

    Did you know that CFAES has hired a counselor to support the needs of their students' mental health?  Dr. Wirt holds counseling sessions in Ag Admin Room 100 four days a week and is in Lincoln Tower on Wednesday. See the attached if you’re interested in making an appointment.

  37. Portfolium Resource Page

    The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.

    You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.  If you missed the initial email, you can also join by using the Portfolium Resource Page.
