"Team 2 won the Oral Competition and the Written Exam on Monday, with Team 1 close behind. Team 1 won the Quiz Bowl last night.  For the overall competition, Team 1 edged out Team 2 by having the lowest sum when adding the rankings on each event. Congratulations to Team 1 for winning this year’s Academic Quadrathlon!

Congratulation to all the teams, and we appreciate your involvement in this exciting competition! Thank you for willingly spending two of your evenings working hard at these challenging events!

The winning team has been invited to represent Ohio State at the Midwest American Society of Animal Sciences meeting.  The event will begin on Sunday, March 11 in Lincoln, NE at the University where the students will compete in the Oral Presentation and Practicum.  It will finish in Omaha on Monday, March 12 with the Written Exam and Quiz Bowl.  I will be joining the students at the meeting.

On February 28th, 2018 , the Meat Judging Team and Meat Science Club will be hosting Outreach Counselors, from the Younkin Center, in the indoor arena (Animal Science).  The outreach counselors will be presenting information regarding an overview of the Counseling Services offered, along with stress management and recognizing signs of distress for our Animal Science students. Do you enjoy working with horses? Do you have free time during the week and want to get paid? Stone's Throw Farm is a small equestrian boarding and lesson facility between Dublin and Powell, right next to Sawmill Road. They need help with turning horses out, mucking stalls, feeding, watering, and general barn tidying. If you can drive a small tractor, they also need help with arena dragging. You must be comfortable around horses and have experience caring for them independently.

If you can only come out once a week, that’s fine. If you can come out several times per week, that’s fine too. As long as you are responsible and pleasant to work with, you are welcome there! If you are an experienced rider and want to do more, show them that you are good with horses and people, and then you can take on exercise rides, riding lessons, and more.

If you need internship credit for school, they are happy to work with your school to have this work experience qualify for credit.

Twisted Arrow Farms is currently seeking college students with equine experience to intern at their facilities in Marysville, Ohio. As an assistant barn manager, students will be required to help manage and maintain a 29 acre facility that currently houses 20 horses with room for more. Applicants must be motivated individuals with a good work ethic, a desire to learn about management skills and practices, and must have reliable transportation. The Ohio State University South Centers, located at 1864 Shyville Road, Piketon, will be hiring college students with excellent work performance and ethics for summer employment. Students will be hired as a Student Assistant and will be performing field or laboratory-work as required. Responsibilities include:  Harvest fruit and vegetables; setting-up irrigation system; collection and analysis of air, plant, water and soil samples; plant and maintain crops; weed and water fruit and vegetable crop plots; maintain landscape beds; washing glassware; mowing grass; data entry; office work, and other miscellaneous work as needed.

Students will be required to work independently or as a group in the field, or laboratory unless otherwise advised by their supervisor.  Primary job site will be Piketon, although some travel to outlying farms or research sites may be required. Weekly schedule will be Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

A family owned farm is seeking a multitasker, utility minded person that is particularly interested in innovative use of a farm. The dairy operations consist of approx. 80 registered B/W and Red and White Holsteins with a few Brown Swiss. They have replacement heifers (upwards of 80 head) and currently 20 calves on bucket. They have IVF activity and are a premier red Breeder. Additionally, the farm also grain farms approx. 800 acres with corn, beans, alfalfa, wheat and other. The pay would start at $10 an hour. Length & Housing are both negotiable. Animal health consciousness, ability to run some equipment, and manual labor are all requirements. Contact Ann McMahan for more information or if interested. 

Black Leg Ranch is offering an internship opportunity for the upcoming summer. The ranch is family owned on 17,000 acres and is located SE of McKenzie, ND, or 25 miles SE of Bismarck. We are a commercial cow/calf operation with 600 cows and graze an additional 2,400 head of cattle in the summer. The ranch also runs an outfitting business and an agri-tourism venue, however the internship will focus on the cattle side of the operation. Black Leg Ranch was the 2016 recipients of the Aldo Leopold Conservation Award for ND, as well as the 2016 NCBA National Environmental Stewardship Award Program.

Job responsibilties include; assisting with calving, building/fixing fence, moving cattle, assisting with planting, assisting with haying, and various day to day ranch requirements. Interns will also be able to learn principles of Holistic Management, Intensive Grazing, Utilizing Cover Crops to build soil health and to cut winter feed costs, and practices to become profitable in a ranching business.

Interns will be provided with on ranch housing and pay will be given as well as a potential bonus upon completion of successful internship. The program will run from May 20^th- August 1^st, and interns can expect to work Monday-Friday. Students will have the opportunity to earn college credits upon successful completion of the internship. Applications are attached and are due by March 10th! The position is located at the Farm, Federal Correctional Complex, Lompoc, CA. The purpose is to provide milk and milk products to institutions in the Western Region of the Bureau of Prisons. The incumbent supervises the institution's dairy operation which consists of dairy herd management, milking, milk processing, packaging, and shipping. He/she is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of the dairy herd enterprise, trains and supervises approximately 30 inmate (20 to 25 per shift) workers, and provides them guidance and direction in order for the work to flow as required to accomplish the assigned tasks. Incumbent is responsible for the planning and assignment of limited, but necessary, weekend, and holiday work. Salary ranges from $29.61-$34.55 per hour. Central/Select Sires has a full-time area sales manager position available! The area sales manager will experience a career with East Central/Select Sires, the industry leader in genetics, reproduction, and product solutions for dairy and beef producers. A modern calf raising and heifer feedlot facility is seeking management assistance in Fresno, CA with 30,000 head facilities and 100 employees. General responsibilities include assisting in managment of daily operations of the cattle feed yard and calf ranch, developing standard operating procedures to feed, treat, move, and care for calves, and monitoring daily tasks performed by the crews responsible for each task. The Stark County Dairy Promoters Scholarship Fund based with The Stark Community Foundation, Canton, Ohio, has helped students for 26 years. Criteria for this scholarship includes: Students whose permanant address is in Stark County, Ohio and who are pursuing 2 or 4 year college level study or graduate level study in the fields of Dairy Science, large animal Veterinary Medicine, Human Nutrition, or Food Science; have a 2.5 high school GPA, and have demonstrated financial need. Students who have won in the past are eligible to apply again. Deadline for application to be submitted is April 1, 2018. New this year, the only way for a student to apply for a scholarship administered through The Stark Community Foundation is online here.

The National Dairy Board has multiple scholarships available to sophmore-senior dairy students and students in the dairy club. Eleven scholarships worth $2,500 each will be awarded. Additionally, the NDB awards a $3,500 James H. Loper Jr. Memorial Scholarship to the outstanding scholarship recipient. Applications are due April 27, 2018. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is now accepting applications for its National Dairy Leadership Scholarship Program. Each year, NMPF allocates monies toward scholarships for the purpose of supporting graduate students actively pursuing dairy-related fields of research that will directly benefit milk marketing cooperatives and the U.S. dairy industry at large.  In past years, the average scholarship awarded has been $6,000 or more. 

Graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines serving the dairy industry have received scholarships from NMPF in recent years. General research areas which have provided useful information to our milk marketing cooperatives include, but are not limited to agricultural communications, dairy research, food science, animal health, etc. Completed applications must be received by NMPF no later than April 6, 2018. The NMPF Board of Directors will select the winning applicants in June 2018. The winners will be notified soon thereafter.  For more information and applications, please visit the NMPF website or contact Beth Briczinski at (703) 243-6111.

All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2018-19 academic year. You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2018-19 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Applicants who have participated in 4-H regardless of University/College, Campus, or major are to complete this application and the additional supplemental questions when you check “Yes” on the involvement in 4-H. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15! All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.
