A graduate research assistantship in range livestock research is available in the Department of Animal and Veterinary Science at the University of Idaho. All coursework will be completed at the UI campus in Moscow, ID and research will be conducted from the NMCREEC in Carmen, ID and the Rock Creek Ranch near Hailey, ID. A Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences, Range, Biology or a related field is required and experience handling livestock is preferred. Applicants must be self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, be able to work individually or as a team member, and demonstrate excellent verbal-communication and written skills.

Red Arrow Farms, a small family farm located in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, is seeking a summer intern to assist in all aspects of farm management, animal husbandry, and markets.

Red Arrow Farms has approximately 65 grass-fed Hereford/Angus cross beef animals and about a dozen bee hives. Products are sold at local farmer's markets during the summer. The farm's products are all natural, with no hormones or chemical supplements.

Duties would include (but may not be limited to):

• Daily animal care assting in moving animals between pastures
• Loading animals for slaughter
• Fence repair and other farm maintenance
• Preparing products for and assisting with two weekly farmer's markets
• Assisting in hive maintenance and honey collection.

Any ideas an intern has to improve operation are welcome and a project of their interest may be incorporated into their summer experience if feasible.

• Salary: $10 per hour
• Start: Appx. May 15th
• Finish: Any point upon allowing the intern at least 300 hours of work experience
• Possibility of housing at farm if intern does not live locally

 McCarty Family Farms is seeking a motivated student to spend the summer learning and understanding all aspects of our unique business. They are a 4th generation family farm that relocated from northeast Pennsylvania to western Kansas in the late 90’s. What started as one farm is now four farms and a processing plant with a direct supply agreement with the Dannon yogurt company. Check out this brochure for more information.

There is a newly formed organic dairy farm near Circleville, OH (about 35 minutes from campus) that is looking for some part-time help during the week or on weekends. This could be during the Spring Semester and/or possibly the summer. This opportunity could be used as an internship or just as a part-time job. The OSU/ATI Dairy farm has internship opportunities available at the farm outside of Wooster, Ohio. The internship will be available from May through August and would be most suitable for those completing their Freshmen or Sophomore years. The internship will focus on the day to day application of management practices and the intern will rotate through four different jobs: Feeding, Milking, Calf and Heifer Raising, and Health and Reproduction. The goal of the internship is to help you see how management decisions affect day to day operations, and also how worker performance affects management decisions. You will be exposed to management programs like PCDart, CowManager, and TMR Tracker, as well as working with other support personnel.

Cheshire Crossing Animal Hospital is looking for a couple students that would like to work evenings and weekends. They need students who have some skill and are reliable. • Assist Feed Director in executing feed sales and marketing plans

The Animal Sciences Department at the Univ of Illinois is searching for a Poultry Farm Manager. 

This position coordinates research activities and directs the daily operational management of the Poultry Research Unit in
Urbana, IL. The position provides hands-on unit management and coordination of animal research; the incumbent interacts closely with faculty, staff, students, administrators, other research unit supervisors, veterinarians, and compliance personnel.

Must have at least 2 years experience working with poultry. B.S. required/M.S. preferred.
 

There is a great position available at QTest Labs as a laboratory animal technician! This is being offered for both full-time and part-time positions!

The Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) will have the primary responsibility for overseeing the animal husbandry on a day-to-day and study-to-study basis.  The LAT will perform daily animal care and daily routine cleaning of labs and offices.  Additionally, the LAT will perform study-specific skill sets as required.  These skill sets may be, but not limited to, study room set-up, environmental logs, animal logs, shipping and handling, data collection, and quality control of data.  The LAT will be trained and signed off on all aspects of the job description, as well as the GLP’s.  The LAT is responsible for reading and following all pertinent SOPs related to the job description and facility.

Applications due April 29, 2017. The Ohio Pork Council will be offering up to $9,000 in scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1000 per individual. Students entering their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year in college are encouraged to apply. Applicants, or their parents, must be actively involved in the pork industry. Children of pork industry employees, managers and contract growers are eligible.

In honor of 44 years of service to Ohio’s pork industry, as executive vice president of the Ohio Pork Council, a scholarship fund has been established to recognize Dick Isler. An annual scholarship of at least $1,000 will be awarded to college students pursuing a degree in agriculture.

The Ohio Pork Council Women will also be offering $500 scholarships to college students in their junior year or higher.

The Stark County Dairy Promoters Scholarship Fund based with the Stark Community Foundation, Canton, Ohio, has helped students for 25 years. Criteria for this scholarship includes: Students whose permanent address is in Stark County, Ohio and who are pursuing 2 or 4 year college level study or graduate level study in the fields of dairy science, large animal Veterinary Medicine, Human Nutrition, or Food Science; have a 2.5 high school GPA, and have demonstrated financial need. Students who have won in the past are eligible to apply again. Deadline for the application to be submitted is April 1, 2017. The scholarship application is now open to the Targeting Excellence program for supporting students with an interest in agriculture. Detailed information about the application process is located at this link. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2017.

Scholarships will be awarded to both undergraduate as well as graduate & veterinary students enrolled in a food animal agriculture related curriculum at an institution that offers agriculture degrees.

A total of $177,000 will be awarded in 2017 from the applications that are submitted. Scholarship amounts will be based on the program in which the student is enrolled for the Fall 2017 semester: $1,000 for 2-year programs, $2,000 for 4-year programs, and $3,000 for graduate & veterinary programs. Preference will be given to students who attend schools in regions where fundraising events were held in 2016. The preference regions for 2017 awards are Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Limited awards as also available in Indiana and Wisconsin where Targeting Excellence is officially hosting 1st annual events in 2017. Additional consideration will be given to students who previously attended any Targeting Excellence event. Finally, preference will always be given to applicants with a desire to work in some aspect of food animal agriculture. Winners will be selected by a scholarship selection committee comprised of members of the Targeting Excellence Board of Directors and regional leaders involved in food animal agriculture.

The shadowing experience will be a mix of lectures/presentations/open discussion and field activities (visit to livestock market, disease outbreak scenario, using wands/PDAs/radio frequency ID technology).  The students will be exposed to multiple aspects of regulatory veterinary medicine; our primary focus as an agency is the promotion and protection of America's livestock and agricultural industries

The DNMC Dairy Summit is an industry gathering of dairy producers and dairy industry professionals that meet annually for a weekend of fun and education.  The 10th annual renewal of this event will be held in late July – early August in a beautiful Colorado location. 

DNMC is pleased to announce the 3rd edition of the Dairy Summit Student Essay Contest. The winner of this contest will be awarded a fully-paid trip, including travel costs to the meeting.  The student will have a spot on the program to present their winning essay. The student’s professor will be offered a complimentary conference registration and is strongly encouraged to attend. The winning essay writer will earn a $500 cash award.

There will be two runners-up recognized at the meeting.  These two individuals will receive a $200 cash award and will be required to send a poster of their winning essay. All essays accepted for submission will be included in a bound volume to be provided to all conference attendees.  This compilation of essays will be a way for contestants to present themselves to as many as 20 western US dairy producers and 12 sponsoring companies for potential future employment opportunities.

The objective of the essay is to clearly define a problem or issue in today’s dairy industry and details of how the student’s educational plans or career plans may be able to offer solutions to solve the problem or address the issue.  The essay should be two pages maximum. The essay should not be a resume or personal story of the student. The essays will be scored on a rubric that focusses on the clear statement of a problem/issue and how it will be addressed by the student.  Writing skills and overall professionalism of the essay will be included in the rubric.

This contest is open to college seniors and master’s degree candidates.  Student’s designated as seniors for the Fall 2017 semester will be considered. Graduate students also need to be enrolled as a student for the Fall 2017 semester.

The Waldock Brothers Award recognizes an Outstanding Senior in Animal Sciences based on criteria including scholarship, leadership, and service to the Department of Animal Sciences, the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, The Ohio State University and the communities served.  The award originates with the Waldock Brothers, Jack and Bill, and recognized their dedication to high-quality education within the Department of Animal Sciences.

The annual Department of Animal Sciences Recognition Banquet will be held on the evening of Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, on the Columbus Campus. All applicants and their parents are encouraged to attend.  Banquet tickets will be provided to the Waldock Award Recipient. Parents and friends can purchase tickets (cost to be determined).
