The Animal Welfare and Behavior Club is collaborating with the Poultry Science Club to have an Omelet and Burrito Fundraiser next Friday, January 18^th from 9am-1pm in Kottman Hall Lobby. Hope to see you there!

Looking to take a free or technical elective this spring? We are offering a new course in Agricultural Systems Management; ASM 3330 - Grain Handling, Drying, and Milling. I have attached a flyer with more details. Students will gain knowledge on the principles of handling, drying, storing, and milling grain. Grain handling equipment discussed will include grain pits, drag and belt conveyors, augers, bucket elevator, and hazard monitoring devices. Drying and storage techniques will include dryeration, in-bin counterflow drying, batch and continuous flow systems. Dry milling principles will include methods, applications, and parameters such as separation of particle size by sieve.

Lab: Wednesday 12:40-3:45PM

The Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership is excited to offer a new course in International Development Theory and Practice (Agricultural Communication 5170) this coming Spring Semester, taught by Dr. Mary Rodriguez.

In this course, students will take an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to understanding international development and their role as future practitioners. Dr. Rodriguez brings years of experience and knowledge in international agricultural development to this course.

The American Dairy Association is looking for a communications intern. The intern will gain experience working in an association setting and utilizing communication skills such as writing, editing, graphic design, photography and social media. The intern will also gain experience in public relations and event planning. The position is in Columbus, Ohio and responsible to the Communications Manager for day-to-day activities. Approximately 25-30 hours per week from May 13-August 9; typical hours will be from 9:30-3:30 but may vary. The deadline to apply is January 25th!

Looking for a job this spring? We are searching for a few motivated students to work in the Parker Dairy Store. The Center for Slavic and East European Studies at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for its 2019-20 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship competition under the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship program. Applications are being accepted for Summer 2019 and Academic Year 2019-20 fellowships for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are pursuing a course of study requiring advanced foreign language and area studies training. Eligible languages taught at Ohio State include Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, and Uzbek, however, subject to approval, fellowships may be used for study at other U.S. institutions, to study abroad, or for other languages.

Applications are being accepted online. The fellowship deadline is February 1, 2019, 4:30PM EST.

This internship will be from May 20th, 2019 through August 2nd, 2019. This year is going to be very competitive, so keep that in mind while filling out the application. They will be unable to provide housing this year but will be more than willing to help candidates from out of state find housing for the summer. Students will be working as gestation and farrowing technicians to understand the day to day operations of a commercial sow farm. They will also be having a research project and intern meetings to help stay on track and make sure students are learning all they can with us during the summer.

Students will be paid their starting salary which comes to $1,000 before taxes on the 15^th and 30^th of every month.  On farm clothing, boots, shampoo, and body wash will be provided. Students must have their own transportation to get to the barn.

Central Ohio, 1,000 cow dairy farm looking for herdsman. Responsibilities include herd health, daily oversight of 2-3 employees, data entry (PC Dart), report generation, supply pricing and ordering, vet checks, hoof trimmer scheduling, coordinating of young livestock movement (to and from the grower), oversight of 2 employees at the calf facility, repo programs, and the possibility of breeding the herd.  Pay will be based on the amount of responsibility accepted, 55K to 70K.  There is the possibility of expanded responsibilities and pay (ie. operations manager) if so desired by an individual. Health insurance offered, matching simple IRA, uniforms, and paid vacation time. ABS-Global has two genetic internships open for summer 2019. The intern will support ABS Global Beef or the ABS Global Dairy research and product development initiatives by supporting data related activities that include data mining, date pipeline development, and data analysis using various statistical and analytic tools. Additionally, the intern will generate information that will inform genetic strategies, genetic program development and custom genetic indices for the ABS propriety genetic program. This roll will interact with individuals across the organization in support of these activities. This position will be located at ABS-Global headquaters in Madison, WI. 

Qualified candiates will possess a degree in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Genetics, Computer Science, Statistics or related field. Strong analytical skills, familiarity with statistical packages (SAS, R, etc.), and experience with scripting or programming tools preferred. Graduate candidates are encouraged to attend along with individuals that plan to start a graduate program in Fall 2019. Qualified undergraduates will also be considered.

Research positions are available for undergraduate students who are interested in research in the Department of Animal Sciences.  Applicants must commit to full-time research over a 10 week period during summer 2019 and participate in the CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum spring semester 2020.  Successful applicants receive a $3500 stipend.  The award is distributed in two parts: $3000 is disbursed into your student account at the beginning of the summer of research and the remaining $500 is disbursed upon participation in the CFAES undergraduate research forum.  Research positions are located on the OSU Columbus campus and at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, Ohio.  Positions include:

The application period for the 2019 Colvin Scholarship is now open. Certified Angus Beef will award five undergraduate awards ranging from $3,000 to $7,500. The top undergraduate applicant also wins an all-expense paid trip to 2019 Certified Angus Beef Annual Conference in Asheville, North Carolina, in late September. 
 
The first place graduate student will earn a $7,500 scholarship and an an all-expense paid trip to our Annual Conference.

AMSA is excited to once again partner with Tyson Foods to host the 3rd Annual Beyond Fresh Meats Short Course in Springdale, AR. Students will work with academic peers and industry professionals to receive hands on experience in Tyson's state of the art industry pilot plant and test kitchen facilities utilizing the content covered in lectures. The course will run from February 22-24, 2019.

Registration will open in November through a link posted on the AMSA website under the Events and Education tab. Student lodging and meals will be provided and registration will be $50 per student. The course will be limited to 50 undergraduate/graduate students who are AMSA student members. Registration will be open to two students from each university initially and then additional students may be permitted based on availability. The course will also be available to university professors/faculty with registration being $50/professional plus the cost of transportation and lodging. Contact Rachel Adams with any questions.

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) launched the Infectious Diseases Student Community of Practice and Engagement (ID SCOPE) in partnership with the Battelle Center for Science, Engineering, and Public Policy, a center within the Glenn College. The ID SCOPE is open to all students, regardless of major or rank as they are trying to engage students from all disciplines given the broad nature of the infectious disease grand challenge/wicked problem. The ID SCOPE features weekly discussion and engagement sessions (Tuesdays, 6pm-7pm) on current infectious disease topics, linking various disciplines, public policy, human behavior and legal components. It also provides research opportunities as well as on-going student mentoring in “soft skill” development. See the attachment for more infomation. 

Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit. If you were a host last semester, we need your new schedule!

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to class, the Oval, the Union, a room in Nosker House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Hosting is open to any CFAES student who has completed at least one semester of classes at the Columbus campus. To sign up, simply fill out this form and email it to Katie Share at share.9@osu.edu. At A.P.E.S. (American Primate Educational Sanctuary) volunteers take on a role similar to that of a keeper in a zoo. They clean the cages, prepare meals, do dishes, prepare enrichment, and other upkeep that may need done. It requires a lot of hard work and they look for dedicated volunteers to help out. Volunteers are required to come at least one designated day each week and work for about 3-4 hours. Volunteering with A.P.E.S. is a very rewarding educational experience. All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
