The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (OSU/ATI) is 2 year technical school located in Wooster, Ohio.  The OSU/ATI Dairy Farm is 100 cow Holstein and Jersey herd that exist to provide practical experience to students during the Fall and Spring semesters.  The OSU/ATI Dairy Farm strives to be a modern efficient and profitable dairy, with their main goal being to provide valuable educational experiences for their students.  In an effort to provide greater opportunities for learning they offer a Summer Internship that will be available from May through August.

Their internship is suitable for students of any class rank we have even had a few graduate students in the past.  The internship will focus on the day to day application of management practices and the intern will rotate between four different jobs: Feeding, Milking, Calf and Heifer Raising, and Health and Reproduction. The goal of the internship is to help the intern see how management decisions effect day to day operations, and also how worker performance effects management decisions.  You will also be exposed to management programs like PCDart, CowManager, and TMR Tracker, as well as working with other support personnel.

Pay will be an Hourly Wage with a Max of 38 hours per week

Heimerl Farms is a highly dedicated family run farming operation located 20 minutes northeast of Columbus in Johnstown, Ohio. Johnstown is home to not only their main office, but also the farm which started their swine enterprise many years ago. The main office is responsible for payroll, record keeping, computer operations, phone calls, feed ordering and processing, etc., which are necessary for their business. One major component vital to their operation located in Johnstown is their recently added on to feed processing facility. At this state of the art facility nearly 60% of our pigs are fed through the feed processed here each day. Although the main office is located in Johnstown, Heimerl Farms Ltd. has many swine operations located throughout the state. Even though they are most widely known for their Swine operations in Ohio, raising Holstein Cattle, plus farming several thousand acres makes Heimerl Farms a vital family oriented farming operation in the state. Topigs Norsvin is a global swine genetics company (www.topigsnorsvin.com) headquartered in Norway and the Netherlands with a US division located in Burnsville, MN. They are looking to recruit two interns (either undergraduate- or graduate-level students) to join them for a 6-week and 10-week (paid) internship this summer. Applications are now available for college-age students to apply for the American Angus Association^®, Angus Media, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), and Angus Foundation 2019 summer internships. These 10-week, paid internships provide hands-on opportunities in the Angus business.
 
The five internships being offered are:
 
Angus Media: This writing-intensive opportunity offers the chance to participate in producing publications, including the Angus Journal, Angus Beef Bulletin, Angus Beef Bulletin EXTRA, Angus Journal Daily, editorial websites and social media. The internship can be tailored to applicants’ strengths, but many duties can be anticipated, including traveling to industry events. Experience in news and feature writing, editing and photography are strongly suggested.
 
Communications: From print stories to TV scripts, photography, graphic design and more, the communications intern will truly gain valuable agricultural communications experience. Applicants should have strong writing and design skills and have completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media would be helpful.
 
Events and education: The intern will assist in planning and executing youth events hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), including preparations, correspondence and coordination for junior shows and events. Applicants should be a self-starter, detail-oriented and outgoing with the ability to work well with others. Livestock and event planning experience is a plus but not required. Travel to the 2018 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference and other events is expected.
 
Angus Foundation: This internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organizations, resource development (fundraising) and purebred livestock association-related careers. The intern will be integral in facilitating the Foundation’s activities, programs and projects and will learn about the functionality of a nonprofit and how the Angus Foundation successfully raises funds to support education, youth and research for the advancement of the Angus breed.
 
AGI: Students pursuing their master’s degree or PhD in animal breeding and genetics should apply for the AGI summer internship. The intern will have the opportunity to work with one of the world’s largest beef genomic databases. The internship will be focused on research that involves data analysis, so candidates should have experience in analyzing animal breeding data sets and genomic data.

Looking for a job this spring? We are searching for a few motivated students to work in the Parker Dairy Store. The Center for Slavic and East European Studies at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for its 2019-20 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship competition under the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship program. Applications are being accepted for Summer 2019 and Academic Year 2019-20 fellowships for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are pursuing a course of study requiring advanced foreign language and area studies training. Eligible languages taught at Ohio State include Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, and Uzbek, however, subject to approval, fellowships may be used for study at other U.S. institutions, to study abroad, or for other languages.

Applications are being accepted online. The fellowship deadline is February 1, 2019, 4:30PM EST.

This internship will be from May 20th, 2019 through August 2nd, 2019. This year is going to be very competitive, so keep that in mind while filling out the application. They will be unable to provide housing this year but will be more than willing to help candidates from out of state find housing for the summer. Students will be working as gestation and farrowing technicians to understand the day to day operations of a commercial sow farm. They will also be having a research project and intern meetings to help stay on track and make sure students are learning all they can with us during the summer.

Students will be paid their starting salary which comes to $1,000 before taxes on the 15^th and 30^th of every month.  On farm clothing, boots, shampoo, and body wash will be provided. Students must have their own transportation to get to the barn.

The NAAB Doak Graduate Fellowship is a unique opportunity for individuals planning to pursue a career in the bovine genetic improvement industry to earn a Master of Science degree in bovine genetics or bovine male reproduction physiology. This is intended for individuals who have long term aspirations in the genetic improvement industry as exemplified by Dr. Gordon Doak, who dedicated 42 years to developing NAAB programs. The fellowship is open to any candidate who has completed a 4-year degree and seeks an advanced degree at a major US university with an approved research project under the guidance of mutually agreeable advisor. AMSA is excited to once again partner with Tyson Foods to host the 3rd Annual Beyond Fresh Meats Short Course in Springdale, AR. Students will work with academic peers and industry professionals to receive hands on experience in Tyson's state of the art industry pilot plant and test kitchen facilities utilizing the content covered in lectures. The course will run from February 22-24, 2019.

Registration will open in November through a link posted on the AMSA website under the Events and Education tab. Student lodging and meals will be provided and registration will be $50 per student. The course will be limited to 50 undergraduate/graduate students who are AMSA student members. Registration will be open to two students from each university initially and then additional students may be permitted based on availability. The course will also be available to university professors/faculty with registration being $50/professional plus the cost of transportation and lodging. Contact Rachel Adams with any questions.

The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) launched the Infectious Diseases Student Community of Practice and Engagement (ID SCOPE) in partnership with the Battelle Center for Science, Engineering, and Public Policy, a center within the Glenn College. The ID SCOPE is open to all students, regardless of major or rank as they are trying to engage students from all disciplines given the broad nature of the infectious disease grand challenge/wicked problem. The ID SCOPE features weekly discussion and engagement sessions (Tuesdays, 6pm-7pm) on current infectious disease topics, linking various disciplines, public policy, human behavior and legal components. It also provides research opportunities as well as on-going student mentoring in “soft skill” development. See the attachment for more infomation. 

Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit. If you were a host last semester, we need your new schedule!

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to class, the Oval, the Union, a room in Nosker House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Hosting is open to any CFAES student who has completed at least one semester of classes at the Columbus campus. To sign up, simply fill out this form and email it to Katie Share at share.9@osu.edu. At A.P.E.S. (American Primate Educational Sanctuary) volunteers take on a role similar to that of a keeper in a zoo. They clean the cages, prepare meals, do dishes, prepare enrichment, and other upkeep that may need done. It requires a lot of hard work and they look for dedicated volunteers to help out. Volunteers are required to come at least one designated day each week and work for about 3-4 hours. Volunteering with A.P.E.S. is a very rewarding educational experience. All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
