OSU’s Pre-Vet Club will be hosting a meeting with Dr. Hoet on March 23rd at 7pm in the VMC Auditorium and YOU are invited!  Dr. Hoet will be talking about the field of veterinary public health (what it is, possible career paths, the Veterinary Public Health program here at Ohio State).

Dr. Hoet has a DVM degree (1991) from Zulia University, Maracaibo, Venezuela; a PhD in Veterinary Preventive Medicine from The Ohio State University (2002), and is a Diplomat in the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. He serves as the Director of the Veterinary Public Health program at Ohio State (http://vet.osu.edu/vph-mph). This program is one of only two ACVPM accredited programs in the USA, and the second largest in the country with >60 graduate students. Dr. Hoet has been teaching and performing research in infectious diseases since 1993, publishing over 66 research articles and book chapters on infectious diseases. His current research interest is on the epidemiology of zoonotic and foodborne pathogens such as MRSA, E. coli, and Salmonella; as well as the molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance associated with these pathogens in humans, animals, and the environment.

The VMC Auditorium is located on west campus across Olentangy River in the Veterinary Medical Center. We have attached a map showing two different ways of getting to VHA. Once you go through the set of double doors on the east side (the doors facing Coffey Road) you will go through the door on the left and up the stairs - the auditorium is up the stairs through the double doors to your left. There will also be executive board members and signs directing you to the correct location. Note that there is heavy construction around the veterinary hospital, so we encourage leaving early to give yourself enough time to be on time.

The theme is “Creativity in the Workplace” so come dressed in business-casual, and ready to show off your originality! Tickets are currently on sale in Kottman 210, and Ag Admin Building 100. Table reservations for club use are also available.

COSI is looking for a hard-working intern to assist with archival and preservation of historical data, including photos, slides, news articles and various paper files dating back to the 1960’s. The inten will be working under the direction of the Volunteer Archivist and the Senior Executive Assistant on a current partnership project with the Columbus Metropolitan Library.  This project is in the early stages and the roles are now being defined, but will likely be all photograph related. USTA is offering the Information & Research internship again this summer!  The number of sales they support has increased, so they will need interns to help with the pedigrees. For more information on this intersting opportunity, see the attached job description. Interested students should send a cover letter and resume to Jennifer Blough, the Director of Human Resources as the United States Trotting Association. 

The National Turkey Federation is currently accepting internship applications for the summer 2016 semester in the Washington, D.C. office.  NTF is seeking a recent graduate or a currently enrolled senior with a desire to learn about and advocate for the turkey industry. Pursuit of, or degree in, poultry science or animal science is strongly desired but not mandatory. Additionally, a strong consideration will be given to those that seek to work in the poultry industry as a career.  This internship is paid, and will assist candidates with finding housing if needed.
Those interested can send a resume, a letter of recommendation, and a cover letter to Sarah Trujillo by close of business on Friday, March 25th.  The cover letter should answer the following two questions: (1) What interests you about the poultry industry? Southern Swiss Dairy, LLC is now accepting applications for their summer internship through March 15. Southern Swiss operates an on-farm creamery alongside a dairy with registered Brown Swiss cows. The document containing additional information about the internship was left out of the email, so you may direct any inquiries here.

Cosi is offering positions as a Summer Animal Specialist Intern. Students will be responsible for providing hands-on care for animals, developing and implementing enrichment methods for the animals. This would be a great resume builder for any Zoology or Animal Science major. Check out the attachment for more details.

Cosi also has volunteer opportunities in Guest Relations for those interested. Duties include interacting with guests by answering questions and assisting with their needs, therefore excellent communications skills are a must. For more information, please view the attachment.

The Ohio Cattlemen's Association and Ohio Beef Council offers many internships for college students throughout the year. A scholarship will be awarded to each intern. Each intern also has the opportunity to earn credit while completing the internship. Internships are available for the summer and fall. For information on the positions, please view the attachment.

The Technical Service Representative at Osborne Industries Inc is responsible for the installation, commissioning and field service of Osborne Industries Automated Swine Equipment. This position provides telephone and online customer support and provides training to customers on the proper use and operation of the equipment. Extensive travel is required both domestic and abroad. Skills in basic electricity to understand and troubleshoot electronics desired. Please view the attachment for application details.

This merit-based, non-renewable scholarship is available to students who have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and can provide letters of recommendation as well as evidence of career motivation. Up to $2,500 is available for students entering their final year in four-year and five-year programs. Up to $1,250 is available to second year students in two year degree programs at public or private technical and community colleges in Ohio.

The Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance (MISA) of the Food Processing Suppliers Association will be awarding seven $10,000 scholarships this year to deserving students studying the meat sciences at universities across the country.  Last year they were awarded to students at Colorado State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Iowa State. Applications can be found online. The deadline for the scholarship submission is May 1. 

The Roy A. Wallace BIF Memorial Fund was established to honor the life and career of Roy A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace worked for Select Sires for 40 years, serving as vice-president of beef programs and devoted his life to beef-cattle improvement. This scholarship was established to encourage young men and women interested in beef cattle improvement to pursue those interests as Mr. Wallace did, with dedication and passion. Two scholarships will be offered in the amount of $1250 each. One will be awarded to a student currently enrolled as an undergraduate and one will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctoral program. Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.

EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a dorm room, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.
