INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

  1. This is Keiche! She is 5 years old and has been with her current family for about 2 years now. Keiche's family got her from close friends that moved to an apartment that didn't allow animals. She spends most of her time outdoors and loves exploring!

ACADEMIC DATES & INFO

  1. Rabbits help lower cholesterol. Cats may lead to a breakthrough in the AIDS epidemic. And dogs have taught doctors new heart surgery techniques. Even lobsters help scientists understand Parkinson's disease.

  2. Beginning in the next admissions cycle (Fall 2018), Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine will not require the GRE.

CAMPUS NEWS & EVENTS

  1. On Thursday, March 22nd at 6:30pm in the Animal Science Arena (111N), the Human-Animal Interactions Club will be hosting Adam Turpen, the director of SCRAM! Wildlife Control at the Ohio Wildlife Center!

  2. Under the leadership of our new Department Chair, Dr. John Foltz, the faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences embarked on a Visioning for the Future exercise on February 27, with the aid of two OSU personnel serving a meeting facilitators.

  3. Make dinner a selfless act by joining the Pre-Veterinary Medical Association for a fundraiser at Chipotle! Stop by the Chipotle at 1726 N High on Monday, March 26 from 5:00-9:00pm.

  4. The next Animal Welfare Club meeting will be March 21st at 5:30 in Enarson 238. We will be covering swine welfare issues and housing concerns. Brownies will be provided!

  5. The ladies of Alpha Sigma Upsilon are hosting a donation drive during the month of March for a local women’s shelter organization, YWCA. They are in need of personal hygiene items, infant care items, new clothes of all sizes, cleaning supplies, and any other essential items.

  6. Pet lover? Vegan? Scientist? Meat enthusiast? Environmentalist? Farmer? Animal rights activist? You all have a perspective. Bring your perspective to the table.

  7. Attend a Mock Interview with Columbus Zoo on Friday, April 6. Experience an in person interview and receive personalized feedback and advice on your interview skills. All mock interviews take place in the CFAES Library.

  8. Join us for an adventure on Thursday, April 12 for the 65th CFAES Celebration of Students (formerly known as the CFAES Recognition Program)!

  9. Let’s discuss the film “Okja”! Are the messages in “Okja” accurate? Do they damage the reputation of farmers and livestock producers? Join Citation Needed and an expert animal scientist for an engaging discussion about this film.

  10. Pharmacy Career Services is pleased to invite you to attend their first annual Employer Showcase event on Wednesday, April 4 from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the Biomedical Research Tower room 115.

  11. Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like.

INTERNSHIP & PART-TIME ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Kentucky Equine Management currently has two Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant positions open at Hagyard. One position is starting immediately through the end of June and the other position is starting in April through July.

  2. Sombrero is one of the largest guest horse operations in the country, currently running about 1500 head.  Sombrero has been around for over 50 years and is still owned by the same family.

  3. Based in Chicago, Vienna Beef has been manufacturing super premium quality beef products since 1893. Currently the company manufactures a wide variety of sausage, deli meat and soup products in the newly remodeled Production Plant located in the Bridgewater neighborhood on the South Side of

  4. Dreams on Horseback, a horse-partnered learning center in Blacklick, Ohio, is looking for unpaid summer interns to assist with programs, provide horse care, and co-lead camp activities.

  5. There is an opportunity to work at the Ohio State Fair in the Entry Department! Responsibilities include data input, copying letters, making show programs, and other office work. Knowledge of livestock is beneficial and the ability to work with Microsoft programs is also important.

  6. Suwannee Valley Feeds is a feed company set up in North Florida and caters to Florida and Georgia dairies. They are planning to offer one summer internship position in 2018. The position will have a focus on forage harvest, sampling, and ensiling of corn silage.

  7. North American Meat Institute is looking for a summer intern. Ideally, a highly motivated upper level undergraduate or graduate student interested in a career in the meat industry and policy.

  8. Do you enjoy working with horses? Do you have free time during the week and want to get paid? Stone's Throw Farm is a small equestrian boarding and lesson facility between Dublin and Powell, right next to Sawmill Road.

  9. AIARD is pleased to announce that the application for the 2018 Future Leaders Forum (FLF) is now available!  As part of the annual Future Leaders Forum (FLF)  in Washington, DC, fellows attend the annual AIARD conference and additional programming just for Future Leaders.

  10. Twisted Arrow Farms is currently seeking college students with equine experience to intern at their facilities in Marysville, Ohio. As an assistant barn manager, students will be required to help manage and maintain a 29 acre facility that currently houses 20 horses with room for more.

  11. A family owned farm is seeking a multitasker, utility minded person that is particularly interested in innovative use of a farm. The dairy operations consist of approx. 80 registered B/W and Red and White Holsteins with a few Brown Swiss.

  12. There are two internships open with the US Trotting Association! Interns will perform tasks related to the gathering, compilation, and dissemination of racing and breeding data for the USTA, its members and customers.

  13. The OSU/ATI Dairy Farm has internship opportunities available at the farm outside Wooster, Ohio. The internship will be available from May through August and would be most suitable for those completing their Freshmen and Sophomore years. The internship will focus on the day to day application of

  14. A barn management internship position is available. The company is looking for equestrian students of any and all disciplines. Applicants must have good work ethic, be able to work on a schedule, and have reliable transportation.

  15. Best Angus and Quarter Horses is a purebred registered Angus operation in the beautiful, rugged badlands of western North Dakota at Elkhorn Creek Ranch, 15 miles southeast of Watford City in McKenzie County. They have multiple paid internship opportunities lasting from May to August.

GRADUATE SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES

  1. OSU is looking for motivated, self-driven and productive student to start Masters' of Science program in the 2018 Autumn semester. The position is fully-funder (tuition covered plus stipend) and is focused on economic modeling of dairy farms.

  2. Dr.Dianna Bourassa is looking for a Masters level student that would be interested in working in the area of poultry welfare during stunning and/or euthanasia. Dr.

FULL-TIME JOB ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. There are immediate part-time and full-time postions availble at a local farm in Hilliard, OH! Experience is preferred, but not required. Job duties include, but are not limited to, stall cleaning, feeding, grooming, and equipment care.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

  1. The NPFDA (National Poultry & Food Distributors Association) Scholarship Foundation is entering its 39th year of scholarship assistance.

  2. The Stark County Dairy Promoters Scholarship Fund based with The Stark Community Foundation, Canton, Ohio, has helped students for 26 years.

  3. Tomorrow's dairy leaders are here today, in classrooms, 4-H clubs, FFA chapters, and on dairy farms across the country. National Dairy Shrine's task is to encourage, stimulate, and inspire them.

  4. The National Dairy Board has multiple scholarships available to sophmore-senior dairy students and students in the dairy club. Eleven scholarships worth $2,500 each will be awarded. Additionally, the NDB awards a $3,500 James H. Loper Jr.

  5. The National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDPRB) is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2017-2018 school year. A copy of the application form is attached. This year, they

STUDY ABROAD INFORMATION

  1. CFAES has a new transcript designation available to recognize student efforts to internationalize their OSU experience. This new designation is called the Global Option (GO).
