Beginning in the next admissions cycle (Fall 2018), Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine will not require the GRE.  However, there may be other institutions that require the admissions exam – please check all relevant web sites to ensure you’re completing the requirements necessary to be eligible to apply to other institutions. 

Under the leadership of our new Department Chair, Dr. John Foltz, the faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences embarked on a Visioning for the Future exercise on February 27, with the aid of two OSU personnel serving a meeting facilitators. The purpose of the meeting was to learn of our strengths, what are needs for improvement, opportunities and threats for future endeavors, and how do we position ourselves to excel in the future. One of the first questions asked of the faculty by the facilitators was “Why are you here?” – no not to recite of the FFA motto at the beginning of the meeting, but a reflection on why we choose to work here. It is important for you as students to realize that the top two responses were because: 1) the faculty enjoy teaching students and assisting in their personal and professional development and 2) the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. It’s important for you to realize that faculty enjoy their jobs because of YOU!

The next Animal Welfare Club meeting will be March 21st at 5:30 in Enarson 238. We will be covering swine welfare issues and housing concerns. Brownies will be provided!

Pet lover? Vegan? Scientist? Meat enthusiast? Environmentalist? Farmer? Animal rights activist? You all have a perspective. Bring your perspective to the table. Join the Animal Welfare and Behavior Club for a unique panel event featuring 4 experts with differing viewpoints, moderated by Andy Vance. The 4 panelists include: Dr. Katy Proudfoot (OSU College of Vet Med, animal welfare representative), Eriyah Flynn (VeganShift, vegan representative), Dr. Leah Dorman (Phibro Animal Health Corp., livestock production representative), and Brian Snyder (OSU InFACT, sustainable food representative). Come and listen to these experts respectfully discuss topics related to animal welfare, animal production, sustainable food production, and animal rights. Plenty of time will be provided for you to ask questions! Join us for an adventure on Thursday, April 12 for the 65^th CFAES Celebration of Students (formerly known as the CFAES Recognition Program)! Be sure to join our “Pre-boarding” reception beginning at 4:45 pm, where all are welcome for mingling and various displays outside the Archie Griffin Ballroom in the Ohio Union. The banquet begins at 5:15 pm. Parking is available for our guests and visitors in the Ohio Union parking garages. Suggested attire is business professional.

Tickets go on sale now (required for only the banquet portion of the evening). The social hour is free. Find a committee member or stop in Ag Admin room 100 or Kottman room 210 to purchase your ticket for $15. For table reservations, contact any committee member. Tables are available for $180 each for student organizations (10 tickets at $15 each plus a $30 reservation fee) and $200 each for departments/schools and guests (10 tickets at $15 each plus a $50 reservation fee). Pharmacy Career Services is pleased to invite you to attend their first annual Employer Showcase event on Wednesday, April 4 from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. in the Biomedical Research Tower room 115. This career event is designed to provide a venue for you to interact with employers in a casual & informational setting. The event will be set up in a speed-networking fashion and it is focused on you learning as much as you can about numerous organizations through group discussions and questions posed by your peers. The hope is to provide a space for you to learn about different companies (even if you are not currently searching for a position), develop strong relationships with the recruiters to secure future opportunities, and attend a flexible and casual event that you can easily go to after class.

Kentucky Equine Management currently has two Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant positions open at Hagyard. One position is starting immediately through the end of June and the other position is starting in April through July. Based in Chicago, Vienna Beef has been manufacturing super premium quality beef products since 1893. Currently the company manufactures a wide variety of sausage, deli meat and soup products in the newly remodeled Production Plant located in the Bridgewater neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. They are looking to partner with two students in the field of Meat Science or Agriculture. In the duration of the paid internship, each student will have hands on experience in the following departments of Vienna Beef; quality assurance, soup, shipping/recieving/purchasing, boning, sausage, packaging, and smokehouse. There is an opportunity to work at the Ohio State Fair in the Entry Department! Responsibilities include data input, copying letters, making show programs, and other office work. Knowledge of livestock is beneficial and the ability to work with Microsoft programs is also important. Candidates should also be self-motivated and have organizational skills. A typical day in the office includes inputting of entries for various species, along with some copying of letters for exhibitors. It will also include some work with Creative Arts along with Ag and Horticulture entries. Questions about entries or payments usually required a call to the family or exhibitor for clarification. When the State Fair is in full swing, the daily tasks include entering/proofing payrolls, updating entries, and creating Fair cattle show programs. North American Meat Institute is looking for a summer intern. Ideally, a highly motivated upper level undergraduate or graduate student interested in a career in the meat industry and policy. This student would work with their legislative, international, scientific, regulatory, and meeting/events teams at the Meat Institute. Interns will have access to full staff as well as multiple networking opportunities in Washington, DC.

The internship would be unpaid. Additional information will follow but please contact Dr. KatieRose McCullough as soon as possible if you are interested. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get hands on experience in DC and in policy making.

AIARD is pleased to announce that the application for the 2018 Future Leaders Forum (FLF) is now available!  As part of the annual Future Leaders Forum (FLF)  in Washington, DC, fellows attend the annual AIARD conference and additional programming just for Future Leaders. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who have a sincere interest in international agriculture and rural development issues and their solutions.

These fellowships are intended to enhance the students' understanding and appreciation of issues and opportunities in international agriculture and rural development. 

Undergraduate or graduate students at U.S. universities, foreign and American are encouraged to apply. See what past FLF participants have to say about the program. Applications are due by March 30, 2018!

A family owned farm is seeking a multitasker, utility minded person that is particularly interested in innovative use of a farm. The dairy operations consist of approx. 80 registered B/W and Red and White Holsteins with a few Brown Swiss. They have replacement heifers (upwards of 80 head) and currently 20 calves on bucket. They have IVF activity and are a premier red Breeder. Additionally, the farm also grain farms approx. 800 acres with corn, beans, alfalfa, wheat and other. The pay would start at $10 an hour. Length & Housing are both negotiable. The OSU/ATI Dairy Farm has internship opportunities available at the farm outside Wooster, Ohio. The internship will be available from May through August and would be most suitable for those completing their Freshmen and Sophomore years. The internship will focus on the day to day application of management practices and the intern will rotate between four different jobs: Feeding, Milking, Calf and Heifer Raising, and Health and Reproduction.  The goal of the internship is to help the intern see how management decisions effect day to day operations, and also how worker performance effects management decisions.  You will also be exposed to management programs like PCDart, CowManager, and TMR Tracker, as well as working with other support personnel. Pay will be an hourly wage with a max of 38 hours per week. Best Angus and Quarter Horses is a purebred registered Angus operation in the beautiful, rugged badlands of western North Dakota at Elkhorn Creek Ranch, 15 miles southeast of Watford City in McKenzie County. They have multiple paid internship opportunities lasting from May to August. Likewise, the company provides furnished, modern private cabins with utilities and combination of family style, boxed lunch, and restaurant meals for interns. OSU is looking for motivated, self-driven and productive student to start Masters' of Science program in the 2018 Autumn semester. The position is fully-funder (tuition covered plus stipend) and is focused on economic modeling of dairy farms. The graduate program in Animal Sciences combines coursework and research to provide training in both applied and basic aspects of Animal Sciences. The research project will integrate nutrition, economics and analysis of farm management  to minimize environmental impacts of dairy farms while maximizing profits. Students with an interest on the application of economics to the animal sciences are particularily encouraged to apply although no previous experience with economic modeling is required. There is a Veterinary Technician position opening at the Chagrin Fall Veterinary Center and Pet Clinic! The position offers flexible hours and a competitive salary. The successful candidate should be competent with assisting in physical examinations, handling and restraining animals, managing care and treatments, client education, using computers to enter medical notes and treatments, and setting up and maintaining treatment areas and supplies. They will also assist with customer service and front desk duties. They would also be interested in new graduates from veterinary technician programs and willing to train right candidate. Central/Select Sires has a full-time area sales manager position available! The area sales manager will experience a career with East Central/Select Sires, the industry leader in genetics, reproduction, and product solutions for dairy and beef producers. The Stark County Dairy Promoters Scholarship Fund based with The Stark Community Foundation, Canton, Ohio, has helped students for 26 years. Criteria for this scholarship includes: Students whose permanant address is in Stark County, Ohio and who are pursuing 2 or 4 year college level study or graduate level study in the fields of Dairy Science, large animal Veterinary Medicine, Human Nutrition, or Food Science; have a 2.5 high school GPA, and have demonstrated financial need. Students who have won in the past are eligible to apply again. Deadline for application to be submitted is April 1, 2018. New this year, the only way for a student to apply for a scholarship administered through The Stark Community Foundation is online here.

The National Dairy Board has multiple scholarships available to sophmore-senior dairy students and students in the dairy club. Eleven scholarships worth $2,500 each will be awarded. Additionally, the NDB awards a $3,500 James H. Loper Jr. Memorial Scholarship to the outstanding scholarship recipient. Applications are due April 27, 2018. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is now accepting applications for its National Dairy Leadership Scholarship Program. Each year, NMPF allocates monies toward scholarships for the purpose of supporting graduate students actively pursuing dairy-related fields of research that will directly benefit milk marketing cooperatives and the U.S. dairy industry at large.  In past years, the average scholarship awarded has been $6,000 or more. 

Graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines serving the dairy industry have received scholarships from NMPF in recent years. General research areas which have provided useful information to our milk marketing cooperatives include, but are not limited to agricultural communications, dairy research, food science, animal health, etc. Completed applications must be received by NMPF no later than April 6, 2018. The NMPF Board of Directors will select the winning applicants in June 2018. The winners will be notified soon thereafter.  For more information and applications, please visit the NMPF website or contact Beth Briczinski at (703) 243-6111.

All students in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are encouraged to fill out the College Scholarship Application for the 2018-19 academic year. You will only need to fill out one application to be eligible for scholarships from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, School of Environment and Natural Resources, and ATI/Wooster. The simple on-line form requires you to write a short 300 word essay, list of present and previous work experience, involvement in extracurricular activities, provide details about involvement in groups. Students in the School of Environment and Natural Resources will only need to complete this application for 2018-19 as the supplemental questions are within this application. Applicants who have participated in 4-H regardless of University/College, Campus, or major are to complete this application and the additional supplemental questions when you check “Yes” on the involvement in 4-H. The priority deadline for completing the application is February 15! CFAES has a new transcript designation available to recognize student efforts to internationalize their OSU experience. This new designation is called the Global Option (GO).

The CFAES GO has four basic components:

• Education Abroad or International Student Status
• Taking a course related to your major or minor (see list) that is international in nature
• Advanced international learning: A second study abroad, or the second set of 3 credit hours for a program that awards 6+ hours, or participate in an international research project, internship or Service Learning experience, or minor in a program that is international in nature, or prove at least minor-level proficiency in a non-English language
• Complete the Global Option Capstone course (FAES 4580) at some point after reaching rank 4 (exceptions allowed for special circumstances such as Agriscience Ed students who are not able to take any additional courses their final year)

The Animal Science Community Alliance (ASCA) is a leadership group comprised of sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Department of Animal Sciences. Each member will assist in the recruitment of high school students, serve as a peer mentor/small group leader in the ANIM SCI 2700 course, support and mentor current students in the department, plan and implement retention events that build community, and engage in the Columbus community through the mentorship of at-risk youth via science education and professional development activites. All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.

You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.  If you missed the initial email, you can also join by using the Portfolium Resource Page.
