  1. Grad Student Assistantship

    Two graduate research assistantships (M.S. or PhD in Animal and Food Sciences) will be available in June or August 2016 with a focus on using Precision Dairy Technologies monitoring animal behavior for detection of dairy cattle transition cow disorders. Specifically, the project will test a proprietary transition cow feed program. Further details can be found on the attachment. Applications will be accepted until April 1, or until a candidate is found.

  2. Summer Research: Aquatic Lab

    The Hamilton Lab in the Department Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology is interested in seeking 4-5 motivated volunteers interested in gaining experience in research in animal behavior. The Hamilton Lab studies the evolution of social behavior in cichlid fish. The lab is looking for students to volunteer to help with animal care (2-3 hours a week) and assist with projects during the summer (2-6 hours a week). Hours are flexible and can be scheduled around other commitments. Students will have the opportunity to continue to volunteer in the fall, and may have the opportunity to develop individual or group undergraduate projects. Tasks volunteers would perform include:
    ·         Feeding fish and maintaining aquariums
    ·         Performing observations and scoring behaviors
    ·         Handling live fish
    Prefer students with a minimum GPA of 3.0, majoring in the life sciences with the long-term goal of pursuing graduate school or a related research career.
    Prospective students should contact Dr. Hamilton and Elizabeth Hoskins, by Friday, April 1, and provide a short statement on their research interests, past research experience, and future career plans. 

  3. Master in Plant Health Management

    Attached is a flyer with info for a GRA opportunity for the Master in Plant Health Management.  The department is seeking someone with an interest and background in Ohio agriculture and someone with an interest and skills for working in OSU Extension.  The student in this position would be well prepared to apply for OSU Extension Educator positions. Review of applications will begin March 31.

  4. Shades of Animal Science

    Shades of Animal Science is an organization that networks students with faculty members and career professionals in the several areas of animal sciences. They participate in several hands-on activities throughout the year with animals such as cattle, primates, big cats, and rabbits. The meetings are every other Tuesday at 6:30 in the Animal Science Building Room 210 or at an off campus location. All are welcome to join and attend!   5. OSU Waterman Dairy Farm

    The Ohio State Waterman Dairy is looking for students interested in the dairy industry who are looking for a paid job or internship for Summer 2016 employment. The OSU Waterman Dairy has 110 registered Jerseys in milk and approximately 165 replacement heifers. The farm facilitates research, gives tours to a wide range of ages, and allows for hands on college course experience.

    Benefits to summer employment gives employees preference to limited fall semester job openings. The farm does provide free on farm housing for students who demonstrate good knowledge and work ethic. These students are held to a higher level of accountability and take on the role of student managers. Additional information can be found on the attachment.

  6. Employee Needed for Family Ranch

    A working cattle and family ranch located near Dubois, Wyoming needs a summer employee. Duties include but are not limited to: cutting lawns, spraying weeds, mending fences, watering lawns and pastures. Some horseback riding experience is preferred.   7. COSI Marketing Internship

    COSI is looking for a marketing intern to work with and assist the Senior Director of Marketing & Communication and the Marketing Team to accomplish marketing campaign objectives including managing assets, coordinating media placements and promotions, analyzing and reporting on campaign results. Additional activities for the student intern would include developing and executing grass roots/affinity group outreach tactics.

  8. Archival Clerical Support Intern at COSI

    COSI is looking for a hard-working intern to assist with archival and preservation of historical data, including photos, slides, news articles and various paper files dating back to the 1960’s. The inten will be working under the direction of the Volunteer Archivist and the Senior Executive Assistant on a current partnership project with the Columbus Metropolitan Library.  This project is in the early stages and the roles are now being defined, but will likely be all photograph related.   9. OSU CVM Parasitology Laboratory Assistant Internship

    Are you interested in gaining experience for veterinary school or applied animal health? Are you also interested in working with veterinary students and capturing a glimpse into life in veterinary school?  The parasitology program in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine is offering an internship opportunity to an undergraduate student to participate as a teaching laboratory helper in the third year veterinary parasitology laboratory. As an assistant, you would handle a variety of samples and learn several laboratory techniques to analyze those samples. You would also learn details about internal gastrointestinal parasites as well as external parasites and become familiar with identifying parasites and their structures through the use of a microscope. By interacting with veterinary students and personnel of the college, you have the chance to see what is expected of an individual at the professional level. This is a unique experience to gain knowledge in the specialized topic of veterinary parasitology.  The department takes two interns per year: one in the fall (1 month, M, T, Th and F afternoons) and another in the spring (Jan through April, several days a week). Applicants must commit to 12 hours per week.

  10. USTA Research Internship

    USTA is offering the Information & Research internship again this summer!  The number of sales they support has increased, so they will need interns to help with the pedigrees. For more information on this intersting opportunity, see the attached job description.   11. Loper Summer Internship

  12. Ohio Poultry Internship

    The Ohio poultry industry is dynamic and growing. There will be an increased need for a well-qualified work force in the near future. The goal of this internship is to expose undergraduate students to the different segments of Ohio’s Poultry Industry with hopes that the student will then select one area to further explore in a future internship. Successful candidates will work three to four weeks at each of the following: Ohio Broiler Operation, Ohio Turkey Operation, Ohio Egg Operation. Time with each of these will include on farm, processing and operational experience.

    Biosecurity is a major consideration when moving employees and visitors from farm to farm. Therefore, there will be approximately one-week between each of the farm located experiences. This week will be spent with the Ohio Poultry Association (OPA) learning about segments of the industry. OPA experiences will include bird health (NPIP) and welfare programs, industry advocacy, consumer education and promotion.

    The Ohio Poultry Association facilitates this program. Overall program supervisor is Jim Chakeres, Executive Vice President. Each poultry operation will be providing one point of contact for the intern. Those interested in this internship should send a cover letter and resume to Mr. Chakeres.

  13. Cosi Internship and Volunteer Opportunities

    Cosi is offering positions as a Summer Animal Specialist Intern. Students will be responsible for providing hands-on care for animals, developing and implementing enrichment methods for the animals. This would be a great resume builder for any Zoology or Animal Science major. Check out the attachment for more details.

    Cosi also has volunteer opportunities in Guest Relations for those interested. Duties include interacting with guests by answering questions and assisting with their needs, therefore excellent communications skills are a must. For more information, please view the attachment.

  14. Ohio Cattlemen's and Ohio Beef Council Internships

    The Ohio Cattlemen's Association and Ohio Beef Council offers many internships for college students throughout the year. A scholarship will be awarded to each intern.   20. NPFDA Scholarship

    The National Poultry & Food Distributors Association awards scholarships to various students of agricultural colleges and universities across the United States. Each selected student will receive a $2000-2500 scholarship from NPFDA. Please visit the website for more details. Applications can be submitted until May 31.

  21. Ohio EPA Scholarship Opportunity

    This merit-based, non-renewable scholarship is available to students who have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and can provide letters of recommendation as well as evidence of career motivation. Up to $2,500 is available for students entering their final year in four-year and five-year programs. Up to $1,250 is available to second year students in two year degree programs at public or private technical and community colleges in Ohio.

  22. NDS Scholarships Available

    National Dairy Shrine would like to announce that scholarship applications are currently available on our website and that the deadline for applications is April 15th.

    National Dairy Shrine offers over $50,000 dollars in scholarships and are hopeful that students from all over the country apply. Please see the attached application form.

  23. MISA Scholarship

    The Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance (MISA) of the Food Processing Suppliers Association will be awarding seven $10,000 scholarships this year to deserving students studying the meat sciences at universities across the country.  Last year they were awarded to students at Colorado State, Kansas State, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Iowa State. Applications can be found online. The deadline for the scholarship submission is May 1

  24. North American Meat Institute Scholarship

    Since its inception in 1985, the North American Meat Institute (NAMI) Scholarship Foundation has granted tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to exceptional undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the Animal, Meat and Food Sciences. The goal of the Foundation is to create a self-perpetuating endowment that will fund scholarships well into the 21st Century.

    Undergraduates majoring in Animal/Meat/Food Science with an orientation toward the post harvest processing of meat and poultry food products or enrolled in a Culinary (Art) Science program, are encouraged to apply.   25. Roy Wallace Beef Improvement Federation Memorial Scholarship

    The Roy A. Wallace BIF Memorial Fund was established to honor the life and career of Roy A. Wallace. Mr. Wallace worked for Select Sires for 40 years, serving as vice-president of beef programs and devoted his life to beef-cattle improvement. This scholarship was established to encourage young men and women interested in beef cattle improvement to pursue those interests as Mr. Wallace did, with dedication and passion. Two scholarships will be offered in the amount of $1250 each. One will be awarded to a student currently enrolled as an undergraduate and one will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a Master of Science or Doctoral program.   26. NDPRB Scholarship

    National Dairy Promotion and Research Board (NDPRB), through Dairy Management Inc. (DMI), annually awards up to 11 $2,500 scholarships to eligible undergraduate students (sophomore through senior) enrolled in college/university programs that emphasize dairy and is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2016-2017 school year.  Check out the attachment for a copy of the application and scholarship details.  Information can also be found on their website. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 22.

  27. AIARD Future Leaders Forum

    In conjunction with the 52nd AIARD Annual Conference, the Future Leaders Forum will be offered again this year thanks to the support of USAID.

    The Association for International Agriculture and Rural Development (AIARD) administers this competitive fellowship program to provide partial financial support to students attending both: 1) the AIARD Annual Conference (June 5-7) and 2) the annual Future Leaders Forum in Washington, D.C. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to students who have a demonstrated interest in international agriculture and rural development issues and their solutions.These fellowships are intended to enhance the students' understanding and appreciation of issues and opportunities in international agriculture and rural development. This program is open to students attending US universities (both US citizens and foreign nationals) who are interested in international agricultural and rural development positions. The objectives of the program are to:

    •             Facilitate student attendance and participation in the AIARD Annual Conference in Washington, DC.

    •             Broaden student vision and help build a broad array of social/cultural, economic and scientific skills required to become an effective 21st century professional in international agriculture and rural development

    •             Facilitate career visioning and networking by providing a day and a half of visits to DC-based agencies, companies and organizations engaged in international agriculture and rural development;

    Applications for scholarships are evaluated by an AIARD committee. As noted above, fellowships are intended to only partially cover expenses related to travel, lodging, registration fees and meals, so students receiving the fellowships will be responsible for obtaining additional funding to cover the total costs of participation.

    The deadline for applications is April 12 at 11:59 p.m., Pacific time.  Fellowship recipients will be notified via email shortly after selection process is completed on April 30. This year's application can be found online.

  28. Animal Sciences Community Alliance

  29. A Day in the Life of a Buckeye

    A Day in the Life of a Buckeye is a program that offers a one-on-one experience for inner city and Appalachian area high school sophomores and juniors to experience life at The Ohio State University, and college in general, for a day. This visit, hosted by currently enrolled undergraduate students, often includes attending classes, interacting with faculty and staff, eating in campus-area dining facilities, visiting the library and recreational facilities, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. If being a host is right up your alley, be sure to sign up online today!

  30. Experience OSU for a Day Hosts Needed

    Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.

    EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a dorm room, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow).   31. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

  32. CFAES Mental Health Counselor

    Did you know that CFAES has hired a counselor to support the needs of their students' mental health?  Dr. Wirt holds counseling sessions in Ag Admin Room 100 four days a week and is in Lincoln Tower on Wednesday. See the attached if you’re interested in making an appointment.

  33. Portfolium Resource Page

    The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.

    You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.  If you missed the initial email, you can also join by using the Portfolium Resource Page.

  34. Animal Sciences Career Services Site

    The Career Services page on the departmental site has been redeveloped to hopefully make it more user-friendly. Check out helpful resources for building a resume, writing cover letters and more. There are resume templates that can be used to create a resume in case you don’t know where to start. In addition, there is an option for students to submit their resume and/or cover letters for review, prior to applying for internships or going to the career expo.
