Student Newsletter: November 5, 2017

Buckeye Parasitology Club is accepting new members! This club includes undergraduates, graduate and professional students. Anyone with an interest in parasites (veterinary or human) is welcome to join. For additional information see the OSU Student Club and Organization listing or the club bulletin board in the VMC just south of Subway.

Fellowships are available to undergraduate students of junior or senior standing in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field who have successfully completed two years of East Asian language study at the college level. Summer 2018 fellowships are expected to cover $5,000 in tuition and fees and also provide a $2,500 stipend. Academic Year 2018-2019 fellowships are expected to contribute $10,000 towards tuition and fees and also provide a $5,000 stipend. Subject to approval, FLAS fellowships may also be used for foreign language and area studies at other U.S. or foreign institutions. COBA/Select Sires is seeking a Communications/Marketing intern for the summer of 2018. This position will provide a wide range of experiences within the dairy industry and will expose students to all facets of the business including communications, marketing, technican work, cattle evaluation, and sales. Tyson R&D Foods is accepting applications to fill 7 internship postions for summer 2018. This internship will provide hands-on experiences and allow individuals to gain mentorship from highly experiences industry professionals. They are looking for Food Science and Meat Science (Animal Science with Meat Science emphasis) undergraduates (who are planning to go to graduate school) and current graduate students. If you are and undergraduate and plan on submitting an application or resume, be sure to include that you plan on going to graduate school.

Sitz Angus is looking for two types of interns: ranch and farm. 

Ranch interns may be involved with feedlot/yard operations, backgrounding, heifer development, maternal herd management, terminal herd management, and summer calving herd management. Interns also may assist with electronic identification, artificial insemination and records management. All interns will receive an introduction to range management and ranch financial management. In addition, the intern will be expected to do seasonal tasks, such as pivot irrigating and meadow haying operations in the fall. 

Farm interns may be involved with seasonal tasks, including planting, cultivating, pivot irrigation, and haying operations. Interns may also get exposure to crop scouting. All interns will receive an introduction to farm management and farm financial management. 

Housing is provided for the interns. At one ranch it is a bunkhouse and at the other ranch the housing is a cabin. The typical work schedule is 6 1/2 days on, with one day off. Being horseback is an option, but not a requirement. One ranch is in Harrison, Montana, which is a very small town with limited amount of things to do for fun unless you travel to Bozeman, Montana. The other ranch is in Dillon, Montana which is a college town, so there are many other opportunities for interns to find things to do on their days off.

Interns are provided access to a vehicle and are paid a salary with bonus potential if they go above and beyond the outlined duties.

The Department of Animal Science under the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for a Program Coordinator III – Dairy Farm Manager. The Dairy Farm is a research farm working with external industry partners, vendors, and a diverse group of faculty, and approximately 40 staff and students. The Dairy Farm Manager reports directly to the Animal Science Farm Director. This position is responsible for overall leadership, direction, and management of the ISU Dairy Farm, including the overall herd health and modern and effective production practices for the operation. The Dairy Farm Manager is fully accountable for developing, implementing, and meeting facility safety, quality, environment, cost, and operation plan objectives. Other responsibilities include implementing and assuring alignment with business strategies, processes, and programs to ensure compliance with ISU and regulatory requirements related to: food safety, employee safety, security, environmental, and human resource compliance. 

This position will collaborate with faculty on a variety of unique research and teaching projects, coordinate details for scientific data collection, and establish appropriate protocols. The manager will also hire and supervise farm employees, and train undergraduate and graduate students in production and research procedures and methods such as data collection, statistical design, and analyses of experience. Further, the position will develop and analyze budgets, make modifications to maximize efficiency, and write reports and summaries relating to data and project activities.

The successful candidate will possess a high level of business acumen in addition to agriculture knowledge in the area of animal science, veterinary science, and animal husbandry including disease management, nutrition, lactation, behavior, breeding, and genetics. They will be self-motivated and be able to work independently along with working productively in a team setting. Effective written and interpersonal communication skills are critical to effectively interact with diverse staff, faculty, and students. The candidate will have a strong ability to direct and guide employees, be detail-oriented, and possess the ability to manage multiple, ongoing projects.

All staff members are expected to interact collegiality and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics. The incumbent must have the ability to work variable hours (depending on work load and certain periods of peak times and seasons), which will include weekends and holidays. The duties of this position require travel to different facilities/locations to carry out position responsibilities, and therefore the candidate must have access to transportation.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 9 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Position Overview: The Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) will have the primary responsibility for overseeing the animal husbandry on a day-to-day and study-to-study basis. The LAT will perform daily animal care and daily routine cleaning of labs and offices. Additionally, the LAT will perform study-specific skill sets as required. These skill sets may be, but not limited to, study room set-up, environmental logs, animal logs, shipping and handling, data collection, and quality control of data. The LAT will be trained and signed off on all aspects of the job description, as well as the GLP’s. The LAT is responsible for reading and following all pertinent SOPs related to the job description and facility.

Essential Job Functions:

· Husbandry for all animals in the facility, including appropriate environmental conditions.

· Handling animals to assist in study-related activities.

· Receiving animals per specific SOP.

· Maintaining and reviewing accurate animal records.

· Report any abnormal animal observations to Study Director and Attending Veterinarian in a timely manner.

· Cleaning and maintaining facility.

· Full Time and Part time Hours Available.

Non-essential Job Functions:

· Maintenance of front office (cleaning, organization, trash, vacuum, etc.).

Requirements:

· Physical ability to move and lift animals and cages.

· Able to work with and handle a variety of animal species.

· Knowledge of computers and software systems (i.e., Excel, Word, Power Point).

Other Skills/Abilities:

· Interaction with personnel, vendors, and clients.

The Department of Animal Sciences is accepting applications for Undergraduate Teaching Assistants for Spring semester 2018! Responsibilities of the position will vary depending on the course assigned and the applicant’s experience. Duties may include grading assistance, student support such as office hours and/or course review sessions, and preparation and assistance with laboratory sessions.  Acceptance for these positions will be based on previous course work, GPA, and letter of intent. Students can earn 1-2 credits of Professional Development (ANIMSCI 3488 or MEATSCI 3488).

All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
