  1. Departmental Merchandise Available for Purchase

    If you’re interested in purchasing departmental embroidered and screen print merchandise, now is the time!  All items can be viewed at osu.outreachpromos.com within the Department of Animals Sciences option box on the left side of the page.  Once you click on an item to view, you will see “SPEC SHEET” written at the top of the clothing description with a PDF link; copy/paste the link into your browser to view specific sizing and material information.  Order forms and money are due by 5:00 pm, Monday, November 2 in Plumb Hall 116 (2027 Coffey Rd., Columbus, OH 43210) to either Joan Jerauld or Mariette Benage. Orders should come in before Thanksgiving. This is the only time merchandise will be available to purchase until next fall, so get your orders in!

  2. Outstanding Senior Award

    The application form for the 2016 Outstanding Senior Award is now available. This is the premier award granted to seniors in CFAES. To qualify for consideration, applicants must have a 3.00 cumulative GPA at the time of application and be graduating during the 2016 calendar year. Selections are made based on the applicant's record of scholarship, leadership, professional and personal growth and involvement in the community, both within OSU and beyond. The deadline for applications is December 16th. All applications will be reviewed in January. A group of students  will be selected, from all who apply, to interview with the selection committee in February. The group of Outstanding Seniors will be recognized at the CFAES Recognition Program on April 7, 2016.  Contact Dr. Marilyn Trefz should you have questions.

  3. Buckeye Royal

    Buckeye Dairy Club

    Looking for an excuse to visit the OSU Waterman Dairy Farm and frolic with some dairy cows? The Buckeye Dairy Club invites you to participate in their annual showmanship contest, the Buckeye Royal, on Friday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. Buckeye Royal is FREE to students, faculty and staff, and participants will receive a FREE long sleeve t-shirt to show in! There will also be a small awards ceremony and pot luck following the contest.

    Novice/Experienced Categories: Participants will have two weeks to break a yearling Jersey heifer to lead for the contest. Participants are required to work with their animals at least four times prior to the contest. Practice times are 4:30-7:00 Monday - Friday, October 12-22. Buckeye Dairy Club members will be at the farm for assistance and advice. Weekend practices upon request. If those times do not work, contact Taylor Kruse or Libby Adelsberger, and they can work with your schedule.

    Costume Contest: Since the contest is close to Halloween, the Buckeye Dairy Club has added a fun category – a costume contest! Pick a theme and find a costume for yourself and your heifer. Entries will be judged based on creativity, functionality and appeal. All costumes (for the heifers) must be pre-approved by the farm managers.

    Registration ends October 7, so sign up today! Participants can register on the Buckeye Dairy Club board in the Animal Science lobby, on the Google Doc, or by directly emailing the Buckeye Dairy Club.

  4. Meat Judging Contest

    Join the Department of Animal Sciences in the First Annual Buckeye Classic Meat Judging Contest, Thursday, November 5 from 6-8:15pm. Students can judge individually or as a team of four (clubs and organizations welcome) from 6-7pm with dinner following directly afterward. This event is free of charge and will be held in 117 Animal Sciences. Awards will be announced Saturday, November 7 at 1pm during the Dept. of Animal Science tailgate event. For those interested in judging, please contact Lyda Garcia so that she may have enough food prepared for the dinner.

  5. Experience OSU for a Day Hosts Needed

    Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.

    EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a room in Norton House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow).   6. Vita Plus Internship

    Vita Plus has posted an opening for their Summer 2016 internship. The objectives of this internship is to introduce an undergraduate student to the activities of a dairy nutritionist and the feed industry. This internship will include time with Vita Plus dairy consultants and technical support staff, dairy producers, and feed production team. The student will be involved in research projects on dairy farms, and work alongside both office and field dairy staff on a variety of projects. This internship will take place at the Vita Plus headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. Check out the flyer for more details. Applications are due November 15.

  7. National Turkey Federation Internship

    The National Turkey Federation is currently accepting internship applications for the Spring 2016 semester in the Washington, D.C. office.  The organization is seeking a recent graduate or a currently enrolled senior with a desire to learn about and advocate for the turkey industry. Pursuit of, or degree in, poultry science or animal science is strongly desired but not mandatory. Additionally, there will be a strong consideration for those that seek to work in the poultry industry as a career.  This internship is paid, and housing assistance will be provided if necessary.

    Interested candidates should send a resume, a letter of recommendation, and a cover letter to Sarah Trujillo by close of business on Friday, November 13th.  The cover letter should answer the following two questions: (1) What interests you about the poultry industry? And (2) Why do you see this internship as a good fit for you?  For more information, please see the attached internship description.

  8. National Pork Board Internships

    The National Pork Board is seeking candidates to apply for the 2016 internship program. To learn about these exciting opportunities, please see the attached descriptions.  There are positions available in Producer Services, Communication, Science and Technology, and Domestic Marketing. Interviews will take place in December. The Pork Board is funded through a market checkoff collection on sales of market swine in the United States. National Pork Board is effectively serving U.S. pork producers through the development of educational programs, coordination of research projects, and increasing the demand for pork meat in domestic and international markets. Students can also visit pork.org for more internship opportunities.

  9. Select Sires Internship

    Select Sires is offering a new internship with the technical services group under the direction of Dr. Ray Nebel.  This internship will focus primarily on dealing with records from domestic and internal dairy customers.  Please see the attached announcement for information on how to apply. The deadline for all applications is November 20.

  12. Winding Creek Internships

    Winding Creek Equestrian Sports Center, a small Co-op boarding facility located in Johnstown, Ohio, is seeking 6 student interns for the 2015-16 school year and summer of 2016. All the barn staff work other full-time jobs and commit to part-time hours at the farm to care for the horses, facilities, and to participate in barn events/programs so it is expected that the interns attend school full-time and commit part-time to the barn. During the school year, the work shifts will consist of one weekday morning, one weekday evening, and one weekend day. During these shifts, interns will be shadowing a barn staff member and assisting with daily chores or large projects. Riding and exercising horses will be dependent upon each intern’s ability. Winding Creek is looking for students interested in the equine industry to help them sharpen their knowledge and to help connect them with the local equine community.

  13. Lazy E Ranch Internship

Positions includes Sales Prep Technician, General Horsemanship, Foaling Attendants, and Breeding Attendants.   14. ASAS Internship

    The ASAS Science Policy Summer Internship Program provides experience for undergraduates and graduate students in legislative, regulatory, or administrative science policy activities in Washington DC.   15. Tyson Foods Internships

The program has 8 positions available, open to current year Juniors and Seniors as well as Graduate students majoring in Food Science, Meat Science, Animal Science / Poultry Science (with a meat focus), and Grain / Bakery Science as well as 1 internship for Food Processing, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineers (Downers Grove, IL).   16. Director of Public Relations

    Position opening for a Director of Public Relations and Consumer Marketing program at the Ohio Beef Council. Staff responsibilities include the development and implementation of beef checkoff-funded programs in the areas of consumer advertising, retail, foodservice, nutrition and veal designed to increase consumer demand for beef and veal products. The position also includes some OCA program coordination. Cattle industry background is strongly preferred.

  20. University Mental Health Resources

    All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

    CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

    Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

    If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

  21. CFAES Mental Health Counselor

    Did you know that CFAES has hired a counselor to support the needs of their students' mental health?  Dr. Wirt holds counseling sessions in Ag Admin Room 100 four days a week and is in Lincoln Tower on Wednesday. See the attached if you’re interested in making an appointment.

  22. Portfolium Resource Page

    The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.

    You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.  If you missed the initial email, you can also join by using the Portfolium Resource Page.
