Buckeye Parasitology Club is accepting new members! This club includes undergraduates, graduate and professional students. Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is looking for a summer commercial dairy intern. The intern will be assigned a sales mentor that they will ride with to become acclimated to the sales climate. They will call on direct producers and dealers in the assigned territory and become involved in data collection and market research work. The intern may be assigned a special project to complete during the internship period.

They are interested in candidates that have a desire to pursue a career in Sales and/or Management that have had exposure to the agricultural field, and are willing to relocate after graduation. Candidates must be at least sophomore status with an overall GPA of 2.8 or higher, have a passion and interest in the feed industry, and are authorized to work within the United States. Candidates must have the ability to lift 50 lbs regularly, manage vehicle confinement for long periods of time, and manage on-the-farm conditions. Successful candidates will have superior verbal and written communication skills and be self-motivated with the ability to manage time and priorities.

Sitz Angus is looking for two types of interns: ranch and farm. 

Ranch interns may be involved with feedlot/yard operations, backgrounding, heifer development, maternal herd management, terminal herd management, and summer calving herd management. Interns also may assist with electronic identification, artificial insemination and records management. All interns will receive an introduction to range management and ranch financial management. In addition, the intern will be expected to do seasonal tasks, such as pivot irrigating and meadow haying operations in the fall. 

Farm interns may be involved with seasonal tasks, including planting, cultivating, pivot irrigation, and haying operations. Interns may also get exposure to crop scouting. All interns will receive an introduction to farm management and farm financial management. 

Housing is provided for the interns. At one ranch it is a bunkhouse and at the other ranch the housing is a cabin. The typical work schedule is 6 1/2 days on, with one day off. Being horseback is an option, but not a requirement. One ranch is in Harrison, Montana, which is a very small town with limited amount of things to do for fun unless you travel to Bozeman, Montana. The other ranch is in Dillon, Montana which is a college town, so there are many other opportunities for interns to find things to do on their days off.

Interns are provided access to a vehicle and are paid a salary with bonus potential if they go above and beyond the outlined duties.

• Work closely with the Nurture Research Center staff and assist with the execution of calf research protocols,
• Collect samples and data from young dairy calves, including (but not limited to) blood, urine, feces, weight, height and other data,
• Order research supplies and prepare treatments as outlined by protocol,
• Enter, organize and manage large data sets,
• Learn how to plate radial immunodiffusion assays and evaluate passive transfer or immunity,
• Provide critical input to the research and development team.

A PhD and/or MS graduate research assistant position(s) is available in Dr. Jackie Boerman’s at Purdue University to pursue projects related to applied dairy cattle nutrition.

A strong undergraduate (or Master’s degree) with a background in Animal Science, Biology or related majors is required, with some prior research experience preferred. Research will be focused on the presentation of diets impact on intake and production and/or nutritionally manipulating energy partitioning in lactating dairy cattle.

A strong candidate will have a competitive GPA and GRE score, experience handling dairy cattle, and previous lab experience. Anticipated start date is January, 2018 and/or August, 2018.

All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.

CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020.  You are still able to connect with a counselor  for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support.  Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.

Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.
