Autumn 2020 Important Dates
The University Registrar's office would like to remind you that grades for students are due according to the schedule below:
- Graduating Students - Autumn Semester and Second Session: Friday, December 11 by 5PM
- Non-Graduating Students - Autumn Semester and Second Session: Monday, December 14
All grades for classes ending on October 12, 2020 are due Saturday, October 17.
*For final exams administered on the last day of exams, grades for graduating students are due by noon the following day.
Other important dates for Autumn 2020:
- Last day to drop and receive a 75% refund: Friday, September 11
- Last day to drop and receive a 50% refund: Friday, September 18
- Last day to drop a course without receiving a "W" on record: Friday, September 18
- Last date to drop a course without petitioning: Friday, October 30
- Student Evaluation of Instruction activation (full term): Monday, November 23
- Student Evaluation of Instruction deactivation (full term): Sunday, December 6

Lemelson-MIT Student Prize
The 2021 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize application has an upcoming deadline of September 25, 2020.
The Lemelson-MIT Student Prize recognizes students at any U.S. college or university who have tested prototypes of technology-based inventions in healthcare, food/water and agriculture, transportation and mobility, and consumer devices and products. Teams of undergraduate students must apply with one invention and individual graduate students must apply with two or more inventions. Inventions are not limited to class projects or thesis work, and any side/personal projects could also be considered. Patents are encouraged but not required. In each of the four categories, undergraduate team winners are awarded $10k and graduate student winners are awarded $15k. In addition, winners receive a national media campaign, exposure to investment and business communities, and a paid trip to an awards celebration.
The online initial application has minimal requirements and is due by September 25, 2020. Students should review our Application Info Packet for complete details about the application process and eligibility requirements. Click here for more information to apply. -
New Internship Requirements
NEW INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Students are no longer permitted to conduct and receive credit for an internship while not also simultaneously enrolled in a course related to the work for which they will earn credit (e.g., interning over the summer and taking ANIM SCI 3191 class the following Autumn). Failure to comply with this university requirement could risk loss of grants, funding, and scholarships, as well as expose the student to risk without access to university student services. Moving forward, all students will be required to enroll in FAES 3191, 0 credit hours, during the term that you are completing your internship requirement. In other words, if you are completing an internship over the summer, you will need to enroll in FAES 3191 during the summer term. This courses is graded S/U and is 0 credit hours; although there is not a cost for tuition at 0 credit hours, there will be fees associated. This does not take the place of enrolling in ANIM SCI 3191 or MEAT SCI 3191. Students will need to enroll in the respective departmental 3191 course either at the time of internship experience or within a year afterwards for academic credit.
To enroll in this course, fill out the attached form and have it signed by your academic advisor.

Career Discovery with Purina Animal Nutrition
Please join Purina Animal Nutrition scientists and other professionals in an online meet and greet to explore careers in industry. This is your chance to ask them questions and expand your career horizons.
This event will include a 40 minute introduction to Land O'Lakes and an overview of it's business unit, Purina. Followed will be a 20 minute breakout session.
Please register in advance of the event and indicate which breakout session/speaker you're interested in. The first five students to register will receive a special Purina package. The student who chats-in the most questions during the breakout session will be rewarded with Purina swag!
Livestock/Lifestyle Sales and Production. Hosted by Joe Fuller, National Farm Production Consultant Leader. Purina feed sales positions are focused on calling on and developing a consultative relationship with animal owners and providing professional nutritional advice to animal owners in the livestock and lifestyle business market segments.
The speakers available for the break out sessions are listed below:
R&D. Hosted by Dr. Robert Jacobs, Equine Innovation Manager. The Purina R&D team conducts research investigating the role of nutrition on various areas of animal physiology. Our team works to develop new feeds and additives to optimize the performance of animals through nutrition through rigorous research trials.
Technical Services. Hosted by Dr. Christina Hayes, Product Manager, Beef Technical Solutions. The Purina tech solution team provides support for the marketing, R&D and sales teams the help the drive the innovation process. In addition, the team provides training and product management in order to deliver the new products and programs derived from the innovation process.
Feed Manufacturing . Hosted by Daniel Coen, Feed Plant Manager. Explore career opportunities within Supply Chain at Land O Lakes, Inc.

CFAES Career Expo-Alumni Mock Interviews
The virtual CFAES Career Fair is right around the corner and CFAES alumni are eager to be a resource to students! The CFAES Alumni Society Board is providing an opportunity for students to practice for a virtual job interview. CFAES students will be paired with CFAES alumni and connect via zoom for a 20 minute virtual practice interview and get advice, tips, and insight from supportive and professional CFAES graduates.
Participate in this event and sign-up HERE before 5pm on Wednesday, September 23. The event will take place on September 28th and 29th. Animal Science Clothing Order
The Department of Animal Sciences is now taking orders for embroidered and screen print clothing items (button up shirts, polos, jackets, vests, sweatshirts, hats, etc.). If you’ve ordered before, be sure to check out the new additions like the bomber jackets! This is only done once a year and everything is "made to order”. In other words, there aren’t extras of anything if you fail to put in an order. We’ve updated our process of ordering clothing this year as well as the website to view/order products. Please see the attached for how to order and pay for your items. All orders & money are due by Friday, October 2nd. Orders will be shipped to the address you submit online and should be in-hand by Thanksgiving!

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Internships
Hagyard Equine Medical Institute has an outstanding lineup of internships to offer during the 2021 breeding season (January-June) from medicine and field care, to surgery focuses.
Why consider Hagyard for an internship? Here are just a few reasons why:
- A very high veterinary caseload provides for ample hands-on learning. Students take the information and skills they are learning in the classroom and apply that information in a real world setting.
- Hagyard has been in business for over 140 years and we’ve been offering internships since the 1940’s. The Veterinary Assistant Internship started in 2008 and we’ve had just under 300 students complete the program.
- This is a paid internship with a formal orientation.
- Continuing education is provided and great networking opportunities.

CSU Breeding Farm
The CSU Equine Reproduction Laboratory offers a unique Equine Breeding Farm Internship Program. The program provides advanced training in equine breeding farm procedures and management for individuals with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry. Applicants should have completed a BS in Equine Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline. This is a one-year, non-degree program. Kentucky Equine Management Internship
The Kentucky Equine Management Internship is planning to host interns for our upcoming Spring Reproduction and Breeding session to be held January 11-June 11, 2021 with some minor modifications to the academic portion of the course.
Applications will be accepted (postmarked) through October 31, 2020.

University of Arkansas Graduate Research Assistantship
A graduate research assistantship (M.S. or Ph.D.) is available for studies within the Department of Animal Science at the University of Arkansas. The selected student will work under the direction of Dr. Kelly Vierck in the area of meat science and muscle biology. Studies conducted will focus on meat quality, flavor development, shelf life, and other meat science topics. Students will have the opportunity to learn a range of laboratory techniques and conduct research as directed by the PI. The selected student will be given the opportunity to be involved with laboratory analyses, project design, data collection, program implementation, data analyses, technical writing and public speaking through presenting at conferences.
Review of applicants will begin on October 26th and continue until the position is filled. Students can be accepted for a fall semester or spring semester start. Please submit a resume or CV and unofficial transcripts to vierck@uark.edu.

Ohio State’s 100% online master's program: MS Translational Pharmacology (MSTP) program is designed for students and clinicians with a bioscience or animal science background. Choose from one of two specializations: Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology or Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Trial Design. Double K Ranch Butcher Shop Manager
KK RANCH CUSTOM MEATS INC & FIFTH SEASON MT LLC are full service artisanal shops located on the DOUBLE K RANCH at the southern end of the beautiful Bitterroot Valley northwest of Darby, Montana. Both facilities are State Inspected. They breed and raise their own beef and pork on the ranch and lamb and bison are sourced from Bitterroot Valley local farms and ranches. Fifth Season sources all its product meats from KK Ranch Custom Meats.
Slaughter Experience and Meat Cutting Experience are necessary. But the job will also include Butcher Shop Fresh Meat Product production, including a variety of meat sausages, pastrami, bacon, jerky, and smoked meats as well as Fifth Season Cured Meat Products Production, including a variety of salumi and cured whole muscle products.

Sunrise Sanctuary Yoga
Sunrise Farm Sanctuary is hosting slow flow yoga at their picturesque farm in Marysville on September 26. The event is open to all levels and the proceeds from the yoga session will benefit all of the adorable creatures who call Sunrise home. Sunrise Farm Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that provides a loving, permanent home for over 170 formerly abused, neglected, disabled or unwanted animals. The farm is run by an all-volunteer staff and depends on events like this socially-distanced yoga event to keep providing happy homes for the animals.
Tickets to the event will cost $25 and after the 40-minute yoga session, you’ll be able to meet and interact with some of the adorable animals. In order to register, you just have to click the link here and send your $25 payment through PayPal. Just be sure to note “YOGA” when sending your payment.

Columbus Eateries Coming Soon
The North Market Bridge Plaza is set for a soft launch in October 2020. Some of the vendors are Bubbles The Tea and Juice Company, Kintsugi Sushi Bar, The Little Kitchen, and Pasta Ditoni’s.
Bubbles The Tea and Juice Company serves smoothies, crafted bubble teas, fresh cold-pressed juices, açaí bowls, and protein bars. Seigo Nishimura–owner and head chef at Satori Ramen Bar in the downtown North Market location–is expanding his portfolio with Kintsugi Sushi Bar. The Little Kitchen will serve those hungry for in-season fruits and vegetables. The plant-based eatery has been operating as a food truck, and this will be its first brick and mortar location. Pasta Dintoni’s features 29 different pasta creations that mix locally sourced vegetables and imported cheeses and spices, with meat and seafood.
Meanwhile, Easton Town Center is preparing to welcome Hawaiian-themed LemonShark Poké & Makai Grill late this fall. They specialize in sustainably sourced sushi-grade fish and hibachi-style grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables. This will be their first Ohio location.

Take advantage of these CFAES career fairs to learn about careers in your field, talk with employers, and learn about job and internship opportunities.
Employers are able to host two types of sessions to interact with students:
- Group Sessions: 30 minutes each, multiple students can attend
- 1:1 Sessions: 10 minutes each, one student and one employer representative can attend
To participate in the virtual career fair, students must register for each day of the event and then sign up for group and 1:1 sessions with employers. Please be sure to check Handshake regularly, as employers are continuing to add sessions.

CABS Route Changes
In alignment with recommendations from the Safe Campus and Scientific Advisory Subgroup, Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) continues to limit occupancy to support safety and physical distancing guidelines. For students coming/going to our CFAES Columbus campus, please note:
- There are only two routes right now during the day. Additional routes are available after 7 p.m.
- MC-Med Center Express goes from West campus directly to the hub near the Herrick Drive Transit Hub and back but does not go past our Midwest bus stop.
- BL-Buckeye Loop: goes from the Buckeye lot (near Ackerman and Fred Taylor) in a loop that goes to the 4-H Center stop (new), Midwest campus stop (Woody Hayes), RPAC, and then back via Olentangy and Ackerman. It runs every 5 minutes during the day.

CFAES Columbus Campus Library and Common Spaces
The CFAES Columbus campus Library will be open Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Information about the current services offered is available at https://library.osu.edu/locations/faes. The library will reopen for the semester on January 25th.
30 study seats and three public workstations are available.

Libraries on Campus
The Libraries are currently offering contact-free pickup by appointment at Thompson Library only, and document delivery through Interlibrary Services. To see a full list of librries and their hours, see here.
The Libraries will reopen to users on January 25, and will aim to provide services that support your teaching, learning and research in a safe and healthy environment. Here’s what that will look like:
Using the Libraries’ space:
· The Veterinary Medicine Library, as well as most department libraries, will operate on a modified schedule of 10am-4pm, Monday-Friday. Thompson and 18th Avenue Libraries will maintain normal hours. Hours are subject to change. Please visit library.osu.edu for current information.
· Masks are required in all University Libraries facilities.
· Library users are asked to maintain a safe, physical distance of six feet apart. We have spaced out seating in our common areas and closed our group study rooms to help make this possible.
· Eating and drinking are not permitted.
· The Veterinary Medicine Library’s space will have restricted seating and will primarily be used for classroom and exam space. You can also pick up reserved books and use our computers, printers, copiers and scanners. We ask that you sanitize surfaces after use.
Using the Libraries’ materials:
· The book stacks will remain closed to the public. Materials must be requested through the Library Catalog. Only University Libraries staff may remove books from shelves. Any books brought to the circulation desk by visitors will have to be quarantined and unavailable for up to five days.
· Materials you request can be picked up at a library circulation desk, or sent to your Columbus campus office.
· Returned materials will be quarantined for five days and will remain checked out on your account until quarantine is complete and they have been checked in.
· Due to quarantine, OhioLINK and Interlibrary Loan requests will be delayed.
· Print course reserves and textbooks will circulate for extended loan periods, rather than two hours or in-library use.
· Requests for new materials will take longer than normal to process.

Animal Sciences COVID Hours
The large majority of our faculty and staff will be telecommuting during the pandemic, which means the best way to get assistance is to email your advisor or instructors with questions, or to set up a Zoom or phone call. There will be a contact directory of email and phone # of all faculty and staff posted at the main office (AS 110). However, we will have administrative assistants that will be in on the following days/times & locations:
- Tuesday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110)
- Thursday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110 & AS 221)
- Friday (10 AM – 2 PM, AS 110)
All buildings on campus have a directional flow that you must follow:
Animal Sciences Building
- Entrance door – south between Animal Science and Parker Food Science Buildings
- Exit door - any available exit other than designated entrance
- South stairway to ascend stairs to floors above
- North stairway to descend stairs
- Lobby area – seating will be revised to ensure social distancing (7 chairs out of 14 will be removed)
- Elevator – one-person limit

Campus Updates and Support
The Safe and Healthy Buckeyes website is continually updated with the most current information about the university's return to campus and navigating the term. This site features resources for accommodations related to COVID-19, daily health checks, living on campus, dining on campus, events and gatherings, mental health and wellness, personal protection, recreation, testing and quarantines, transportation, and more.

University Mental Health Resources
All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.
CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020. You are still able to connect with a counselor for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support. Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.
Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

CFAES Mental Health Counselor

Handshake
Ohio State has switched to Handshake - a modern career development platform for students to explore career employment, internships and other opportunities, based on their interests, major and skills. FisherConnect and Symplicity (CareerEngine, Hireabuckeye, FutureLink, Buckeye Careers Network) have transitioned to Handshake.
Handshake offers many exciting new features, including:
- Relevant feed of job and internship opportunities
- News feed containing the latest information from career services offices and favorite employers
- Resources specifically matching students interests
Student accounts are preloaded and can be accessed at http://handshake.osu.edu/, using their name.# and password. Students will need to complete their profiles with details, such as work experiences, skills, interests and organizations. Next, students can explore the many resources and tools that are available in Handshake.

Portfolium Resource Page
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.
You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.
