Online Veterinary Entomology
A seven-week, on-line course in Veterinary Entomology (ENTMLGY4607) will commence on Monday October 19th (weeks 8-14 of Autumn Semester). This 2-credit course will introduce students to the fascinating world of arthropod pests (ticks, fleas, flies, etc.) that impact the health and well-being of domesticated animals. Students of any major are welcome to enroll; those with an interest in Animal Science and/or Veterinary Medicine are especially encouraged. No prerequisites are required. Fall Break Trip
Not sure of what to do during your fall break? Join FAES as they travel to the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center and Young’s Jersey Dairy!. The trip is FREE to CFAES students, faculty and staff and includes breakfast and lunch thanks to CFAES Equity and Inclusion. Online pre-registration is required. The group will depart Ag. Admin at 9:00 and return by 5:30pm on Thursday October 15. Check out the flyer for more details.

Buckeye Royal
Looking for an excuse to visit the OSU Waterman Dairy Farm and frolic with some dairy cows? The Buckeye Dairy Club invites you to participate in their annual showmanship contest, the Buckeye Royal, on Friday, October 23 at 5:00 p.m. Buckeye Royal is FREE to students, faculty and staff, and participants will receive a FREE long sleeve t-shirt to show in! There will also be a small awards ceremony and pot luck following the contest.
Novice/Experienced Categories: Participants will have two weeks to break a yearling Jersey heifer to lead for the contest. Participants are required to work with their animals at least four times prior to the contest. Practice times are 4:30-7:00 Monday - Friday, October 12-22. Buckeye Dairy Club members will be at the farm for assistance and advice. Weekend practices upon request. If those times do not work, contact Taylor Kruse or Libby Adelsberger, and they can work with your schedule.
Costume Contest: Since the contest is close to Halloween, the Buckeye Dairy Club has added a fun category – a costume contest! Pick a theme and find a costume for yourself and your heifer. Entries will be judged based on creativity, functionality and appeal. All costumes (for the heifers) must be pre-approved by the farm managers.
Registration ends October 7, so sign up today! Participants can register on the Buckeye Dairy Club board in the Animal Science lobby, on the Google Doc, or by directly emailing the Buckeye Dairy Club. -
Professional Networking in Animal Sciences
A new course, Professional Networking in Animal Sciences, will be meeting Thursdays from 12:40-1:35 in 112 Kottman Hall. This course will have 10 leaders in the animal industry and government from around Ohio visit campus this fall to talk with the class on their backgrounds, careers, company/government agency, and potential opportunities for Animal Sciences graduates. Meat Judging Contest
Join the Department of Animal Sciences in the First Annual Buckeye Classic Meat Judging Contest, Thursday, November 5 from 6-8:15pm. Students can judge individually or as a team of four (clubs and organizations welcome) from 6-7pm with dinner following directly afterward. This event is free of charge and will be held in 117 Animal Sciences. Awards will be announced Saturday, November 7 at 1pm during the Dept. of Animal Science tailgate event. For those interested in judging, please contact Lyda Garcia so that she may have enough food prepared for the dinner.

STEP Expo
Have you heard about the Second-year Transformational Experience Program (STEP), but you’re not sure how it works or how it will benefit you next year? Join us at the STEP Expo and learn how students just like you have had truly transformational experiences through STEP.
The Second-Year Transformational Experience Program or STEP Expo will be held in the Archie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom in the Ohio Union on Thursday, October 1 from 11 AM-12 PM, 12:30 PM-1:30 PM, 2 PM-3 PM, and 3:30 PM-4:30 PM.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend and see the transformational experiences our STEP students are engaging in through Artistic and Creative Endeavors; Service-Learning and Community Service; Study Abroad; Leadership; Internships; and/or Undergraduate Research. Eligible STEP students apply for up to $2,000 to participate in one of these experiences in order to enhance their undergraduate experience and help prepare them for the future. This expo will feature the experiences of those students who completed their projects in spring or summer of 2015. -

JOINT VETERINARY TECHNOLOGY INFO SESSION
Have you ever thought about completing a veterinary technology degree in addition to your animal science one? If so, the joint veterinary technology program between OSU and CSCC might be for you. All those interested should plan to attend the information session on Thursday, October 8th at 5:30 in Plumb Hall 102. Anyone interested in applying to the program this academic year must attend. Experience OSU for a Day Hosts Needed
Do you enjoy sharing your passion for Ohio State with others? Would you be willing to show high school students what it is like to be a Buckeye? The "Experience OSU for a Day" (EOFD) Program allows prospective students to get a feel for what college is really like. These students visit CFAES frequently, and we are in need of volunteers to show these students around campus when they come to visit.
EOFD Hosts volunteer to have prospective high school students shadow them from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for 1-2 weekdays each semester. Hosting is very flexible and can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Hosts are encouraged to take their shadow(s) to see various classrooms, the Oval, the Union, a room in Norton House, and to eat lunch at Parker Dairy Store (lunch is free for the host and shadow). Winding Creek Internships
Winding Creek Equestrian Sports Center, a small Co-op boarding facility located in Johnstown, Ohio, is seeking 6 student interns for the 2015-16 school year and summer of 2016. All the barn staff work other full-time jobs and commit to part-time hours at the farm to care for the horses, facilities, and to participate in barn events/programs so it is expected that the interns attend school full-time and commit part-time to the barn. During the school year, the work shifts will consist of one weekday morning, one weekday evening, and one weekend day. During these shifts, interns will be shadowing a barn staff member and assisting with daily chores or large projects. Riding and exercising horses will be dependent upon each intern’s ability. Winding Creek is looking for students interested in the equine industry to help them sharpen their knowledge and to help connect them with the local equine community.

The Lazy E Ranch, LLC in Guthrie, Oklahoma is looking for several enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals for multiple internship positions. ASAS Internship
The ASAS Science Policy Summer Internship Program provides experience for undergraduates and graduate students in legislative, regulatory, or administrative science policy activities in Washington DC. A full description of the program can be found on the attachment. The deadline to apply is October 30th.

South Wind Stables in Pataskala, OH is seeking 1-2 interns for immediate start who are interested in developing their knowledge and skill in equine management, development and care. The facility specializes in developing horses of a variety of breeds and interests, houses 17 horses, has riding trails on 60 acres, and an indoor arena of 80x200.

Equine Breeding Farm Internship
The Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University is accepting applications for an Equine Breeding Farm Internship that will begin on January 1, 2016. The goal of the program is to provide advanced training in equine breeding farm procedures and management. The program is aimed preferentially for people with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry. Interns will participate in a one (1) year program. One intern will start on January 1 and finish on December 31 of that same year. A second intern will start on July 1 and finish on June 30 of the following year. Applicants should have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science or related discipline. For more information, view the attached flyer. Calf Research on Dairy Farm
A large commercial dairy farm is seeking to hire 2 to 3 part-time employees to assist with a dairy calf research project. The overall goal of the project is to reduce disease prevalence and increase recovery time for sick calves. A PhD student from the University of Wisconsin, who is currently a visiting scholar at The Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will mentor the student employees. Students will develop a strong understanding about calf health, and will get hands-on experience identifying calf diseases, and managing calves during the pre-weaning phase.
The student employee will aid with a research project from mid- October 2015 to June 2016. The employee will be trained to restrain dairy calves for a health examination, which includes respiratory score and lung ultrasonography. Employees will also be expected to perform respiratory scores on calves, record health score and treatment information, assist with blood sampling, and help with other project needs.
Position is paid $10/hr
Job Requirements:
- Must be available at least 2 days/week for 5 consecutive hours/day
- Must have reliable transportation to and from the farm (the farm is located 43 miles from OSU Columbus campus)
- Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends
- No calf handling experience is necessary, we can train you
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn

University Mental Health Resources
All OSU Counseling and Consultation Services (CCS) staff were sent home to tele-commute until further notice.The CCS phone line 614-292-5766 remains available for emergency assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students can push 2 to reach a mental health counselor at any time.
CCS has suspended onsite and in person services, including those at embedded locations, through at least May 3, 2020. You are still able to connect with a counselor for a 30 minute phone or video consultation using Carmen Zoom or Skype. These consultations are offered 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday through Friday in order to check in with students, problem solve, and offer support. Students will need to share their address/location at the time of the call.
Students can access many self-help tools that are available on the CCS website at https://ccs.osu.edu . The CCS COVID-19 updates page linked to the website is a great resource. On that page, students will find helpful coping skills such as the mental health strategies video series. This time that can be difficult for many. All students are encouraged to check that out.

If you encounter a suspected emergency situation with any student during this time, crisis support is available by calling CCS at 614-292-5766. If this happens with the student remotely located, please try to get as much contact information about the student such as name, phone number, OSU dot #, and address where they are currently located. If you suspect safety is at risk or compromised at that time for the student or anyone they are with, please call 9-1-1. They will help immediately regardless of where the student is physically located. After you have done one of the steps above, please let me know of the situation so that follow up contact attempts can be made with the student. Please make sure to provide me with the best way to reach you right now too.

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences has renewed its partnership with Portfolium.com and will continue to provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio. In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume. Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials. In other words, attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations help demonstrate your knowledge and abilities.
You should have already received your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email contains a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.
