Unique Course Now Offered
Looking for a unique course to take this fall? CFAES Dean Kress and Dr. Hitzhusen from ENR will be offering a Group Studies course (ENR/FAES 5194) titled “What Does it Mean to be a Good Person?”
This course allows students to reflect on life-long questions of what it means to be a good person. Who do we think we are? How can we live well? What are the principles, patterns, and outcomes of good lives lived by good people as understood through different perspectives? How do we find our own authentic voice and direction amid personal challenges, family life, and food, agricultural and environmental careers? This course is designed to explore these and related questions, and to provide students an opportunity to discuss these ideas with peers, instructors, and community leaders. Students are encouraged to adopt an inquiring, anthropological mind as we explore readings for clues as to what we believe.
Please see the attached course flyer for additional details.

W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute
NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR A YEAR-LONG DAIRY INTERNSHIP at W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute
W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute is now accepting applications for their next dairy management intern – a fantastic opportunity for a motivated college graduate who is looking for hands-on experience in dairy management. This year-long internship is a herdsman training program that is tailored to each intern and their career goals. The intern works closely with the herd health manager and farm manager, but also works with the other farm employees as well – feeders, calf manager, milkers. Jobs include assisting with calving, fresh cow care, vaccination, heat detection and reproductive management, diagnosing and treating sick animals and using management software including Dairy Comp 305 and the SCR health and detection system. The intern will work with our herd veterinarian and nutritionist and will gain experience in labor management on the farm.
There are many different learning and networking opportunities throughout the year - guest speakers and classes at the Institute and regional conferences. Applicants should have at least some dairy experience, be motivated and show an ability to work hard and cooperate with others. It is important the intern be eager to learn, able to follow instructions and use good judgment and be fluent in English. The valuable on-farm experience and dairy management skills acquired through this internship makes it an ideal transition between college and a career in the dairy industry. Their previous interns are all working in the dairy industry, in different capacities – several are herdsmen, one is now a veterinarian, and another went on for her Master’s Degree and became a dairy nutritionist in Wisconsin. Miner Institute is an equal opportunity employer. In accordance with federal and state law, all applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, national origin, disability, military status, domestic violence victim status, predisposing genetic characteristics, sexual orientation or any other basis protected by law.
The internship is a paid position and housing is provided in the student complex. If you have questions or would like to apply for the position, please send your resume and a letter (outlining your career goals and how this internship would be mutually beneficial to the farm and to you) to Steve Couture at couture@whminer.com . They will be accepting applications until they find the right person, though they hope to have a new intern in place as soon as possible.
