He received his BS from South Dakota State University, his MS from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his PhD from Michigan State University. Kirby’s primary responsibilities are research and extension in dairy cattle nutrition and health. His past research includes investigations of forage and non-forage fiber feeding strategies, effects of feeding on systemic inflammation, and the role of nutrients in combatting systemic inflammation. Currently, he is conducting research to improve our understanding of ruminant gut health with particular focus on how diet or physiological status may affect the rumen epithelium. Kirby is also continuing applied nutrition research with the goal of increasing the health, efficiency, and sustainability of lactating dairy cattle. Kirby’s extension activities will revolve around enhancing the dairy industry’s sustainability by aiding farmers in making decisions that improve animal health and efficiency while also improving their operations’ profitability.
