The Department of Animal Sciences accepts applications for Undergraduate Teaching Assistants (UTA). Responsibilities may include grading assistance, student support (including office hours 
and/or course review sessions), and preparation for and assistance with laboratory sessions. Undergraduate Teaching Assistants are supervised and cannot lead a course session on their own. Acceptance for these positions is based on previous course work, GPA, and letter of intent. Accepted students will receive training on the expectations and guidelines for serving as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant. Based on satisfactory evaluation by the course leader, students may earn 1-2 credits of Professional Development (ANIMSCI 3488 or MEATSCI 3488) for completion of the assigned semester duties. These are unpaid positions. In addition to assigned course duties, students will develop teaching and communication skills. Students who apply should have a sincere interest in and commit to helping their peers succeed in course work and further developing their own interpersonal skills. Applications are accepted each term. The deadlines are May 1 for autumn and summer term and December 1 for spring term. Assignments are made by a faculty committee, and accepted applicants are notified prior to the beginning of the term of the assignment.
The following criteria are used in determining assignments*:
- Third year rank or higher
- Enrollment in the Department of Animal Sciences on the Columbus campus for at least one year
- Successful completion of at least 3 of the following courses: 3100, 3110, 3130, 3140, 3150, 3160, or 3170
- 3.0 GPA or better overall in the major
- Completion of the UTA course assignment with a letter grade of a “B” or better
* Students that do not fulfill these minimum criteria may be considered for a UTA position if they hold equivalent and/or desired experience.
